CANADIAN ANGLICAN GENERAL SYNOD REFUSES TO RECOGNIZE EX-GAYS

ST. CATHARINES, Ontario — June 4, 2004

The Anglican General Synod voted to amend a motion on same-sex blessings to include consultation with gay and lesbian members. However, a proposed amendment to include those who identify as “ex-gay” was defeated.

Commentator Peter Ould criticized the decision, arguing that it excluded the voices of individuals who claim to have experienced change or healing from same-sex attraction.

He accused the synod of selectively applying the language of inclusion while sidelining dissenting perspectives.

The debate highlighted ongoing tensions within the Church over sexuality, identity, and pastoral care. Critics claimed the exclusion demonstrated political motivations rather than a commitment to broad listening.

The decision intensified frustration among conservative members who said their experiences were ignored.
