Dear Friends and Members of Holy Cross Cathedral,
We are saddened to share that Dean Michael Guernsey has submitted his resignation as Dean of Holy Cross Cathedral. This was a difficult decision for him, made only after much prayer and consideration. At this time, he believes it is best for both his family and the Cathedral to bring his ministry to a close and to allow all involved to move forward.
Over the past several months, concerns from staff and parishioners (and former parishioners) were brought to the attention of Diocesan Leadership and the Cathedral Chapter regarding various aspects of parish leadership, communication, and Fr. Michael’s overall health and wellbeing.
In keeping with our diocesan policies, and out of deep pastoral care for both Fr. Michael and Holy Cross Cathedral, he was placed on a leave of absence beginning August 26. This allowed time for both the ACNA’s normal process to examine the concerns raised and for a period of prayerful evaluation, conversation, and discernment about the best path forward for him and for the parish.
Dean Michael has been a blessing to Holy Cross Cathedral during his tenure and his ministry will be deeply missed. Now, we ask the congregation to come together, support one another, and help restore the stability as we walk together through the transition process. The Chapter will begin the process of searching for an interim Dean, and then we will begin the process of searching for a new Dean. With your prayers and support, we trust that God will guide us through this transition into the next chapter of our life together.
We will have a Farewell Reception for Dean Michael and his family on Sunday afternoon, December 14th at 4:00 pm. in the Strickland Student Center. The Church is invited to come and say thank you for his ministry at Holy Cross, and love offerings are appropriate.
We ask you to join us in praying for Fr. Michael and his family, for Holy Cross Cathedral Congregation, Staff and Chapter, and for all who were impacted by his leadership.
Faithfully in Christ,
Roy Acord, Dean’s Warden
Foley Beach, Bishop
