It should not need saying, but it must be said: our Christian faith is a faith in the rising of Jesus Christ from the tomb in his glorified body; and so it is about leading lives that take the life of the body seriously. The words for 'salvation' and 'health' cannot be distinguished in most languages, and this should remind us that faith in Christ has to be bound up with care for suffering bodies as well as suffering souls.

March 23 2005 By virtueonline SCOTLAND: 'BISHOPS CAN BE GAY'

The statement was made on the church website in response to a February meeting of 35 top world Anglican leaders.

The Scottish bishops also said clergy on occasion responded to requests to give a blessing to same-sex couples.

It is believed to be the first time the Scottish church - which has 45,000 members - has publicly declared its position on gay clergy and blessings of homosexual couples.

Gay rights group Stonewall welcomed the Scottish church's stance.

The C of E will ordain homosexuals only if they are not in a physical relationship. Rowan Williams, archbishop of Canterbury and communion head, has warned that those who take risks over the ordination of homosexuals must face the consequences.

One leading Episcopalian, Nancy Adams, a church committee convener, said it was aligned with Canada and North America in terms of welcoming and embracing the gay and lesbian community.

Archbishop Henry Luke Orombi, Anglican primate of Uganda, prefers the word partnership to alliance when speaking of his new friendship with the Archbishop of Sydney, Dr Peter Jensen.

In Australia as a guest of the Sydney diocese, he is so impressed with Moore Theological College, Newtown, he is discussing the possibility of sending postgraduate seminarians for study, as well as conducting joint missions with Sydney parishes in Uganda.

Her controversial sermon centered on the idea that men and women should treat each other as equals.

March 21 2005 By virtueonline LONDON: Rowan Williams urges debate on abortion

Tory leader Michael Howard supports a reduction in the legal limit when abortions are allowed from 24 weeks to 20 and has said current rules are "tantamount to abortion on demand".

But Prime Minister Tony Blair has made it clear he has no plans to change the law.

He says abortion should not be an election issue, arguing it is a matter for individual conscience.
