The Trouble with Innovative Anglicanism And The Passing of Alexander Solzhenitsyn

The 2008 Lambert Conference has come and gone. But at the conclusion of this great gathering of the Anglican Bishops from around the globe came the shocking news of the passing of Alexandr Solzhenitsyn.

Is it just a mere coincidence or plainly prophetic? Is the death of this modern Prophet a signal of the death of Anglicanism as we knew it and the emergence of something that we can now call 'Innovative Anglicanism' - a caricature of the true faith 'once delivered unto the Saints.'

Or is it the rebirth of genuine Anglicanism anchored in the strong and uncompromising faith of the Bishops of the South Cone of the Anglican Dioceses.

It is my utmost prayer that the death of Alexandr Solzhenitsyn be not a sign that those Orthodox Anglicans as we know them are tiring out and dying off rather a sign of the dying of unchecked and ultra liberal Anglicanism.

We must never forget that had Alexandr Solzhenitsyn died too young as were many who had gone through the forced laborer Camps of the Soviet Union, that evil empire might still be with us today. Suffice to say therefore that the death of the warrior prophet of post-modernism or better still post-Christianity, Alexandr Solzhenitsyn could be the sign of the death of the old and the rebirth of the prophetic new orthodox and fearless Anglicanism carrying on in the spirit of Alexandr Solzhenitsyn.

Solzhenitsyn thoughts and words reflected all that got us to where we are today in the Episcopal Church of the USA (ECUSA) and the wide-world Anglicanism. But just like he fortified the West with the truth and will to triumph in the Cold War, I pray the Orthodox Anglicans be fortified with the Truth and the will to triumph over utter liberalism that has eaten deep into modern Anglicanism.

Mr. Solzhenitsyn chronicle on the Soviet Gulag in his great book "One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich and The Gulag Archipelago" is a classical proof that one person's courage and integrity could, in the end, defeat the totalitarian machinery of an empire.

Is there any lesson for the Orthodox and Bible believing Anglicans of this age even those who can hold on to the 39 Articles of Religion or as I love to call it, 'The 39 Articles of our Confessional Faith?' Just like Mr. Solzhenitsyn was heir to a morally focused and often prophetic Russian literary tradition, can those who are still believing the Bible to be the very Word of God in the traditional Anglican Church as we know it stand up and stand still as the heirs to Crammer and Hooker.

Mr. Solzhenitsyn's stern visage, lofty brow and full, Old Testament beard as he recalled Tolstoy while suggesting a modern-day Jeremiah as he denounced the evils of the Kremlin and later the mores of the West. Then picture with me how one man's courage and commitment to the Truth can change the course of history and a nation. Yes, for Mr. Alexandr Solzhenitsyn, justice without truth is a sham just like freedom without the bounds of the very word of God is actually an abject bondage. This is what Dietrich Bonhoffer called 'Cheap Grace.' Hence, my faith that all is not too late of wide-world Anglicanism.

Mr. Solzhenitsyn's vision of Russia as a bastion of Orthodox Christianity, as a place with a unique culture and destiny eventually was fulfilled under President Vladimir Putin. We are now witnessing the revival of Orthodox Christianity in Russia and the reemergence of Russian pride in Christian and Church traditions. It is not too late for the West as long as our God continues to raise for us the likes of Mr. Solzhenitsyn in the wide-world Anglican Church. Such are they who are decrying the ungodly and immoral theological foundations already established in most of our seminaries across the United States of America, Canada and the United Kingdom.

In 1978, this very reclusive exile left his Vermont home to address the graduates of Harvard University and then took his audience to task. In contrast to their nation's founders, he said, Americans abuse individual freedoms, worship the gods of materialism, and neglect their spiritual heritage. Did he also have the Episcopal Church of the United States of America and the Church of England in mind in this address? An excerpt of his indictment of the West and by implication the Church reads like this:

However, in early democracies, as in the American democracy at the time of its birth, all individual human rights were granted because man is God's creature. That is, freedom was given to the individual conditionally, in the assumption of his constant religious responsibility. Such was the heritage of the preceding thousand years. Two hundred or even fifty years ago, it would have seemed quite impossible, in America, that an individual could be granted boundless freedom simply for the satisfaction of his instincts or whims.

Subsequently, however, all such limitations were discarded everywhere in the West; a total liberation occurred from the moral heritage of Christian centuries with their great reserves of mercy and sacrifice. ... State systems were becoming increasingly and totally materialistic. The West ended up by truly enforcing human rights, sometimes even excessively, but man's sense of responsibility to God and society grew dimmer and dimmer.

It does not matter how the West perceived him, Alexandr Solzhenitsyn crippled the Kremlin by the power of his courageous truth telling and fearlessly spoke his mind about American decadence. Alexandr Solzhenitsyn taught us that the freedom that brings material wealth must not be the freedom that would make us slaves to that material wealth with all its inherit power to corrupt and bankrupt us morally.

Upon the return of Mr. Alexandr Solzhenitsyn to Russia in 1994, he gave us his further vision of Russia's future. Like the prophet he was, he made us aware that Russia would seek to reverse the destructive force of 'freedom' understood within a nonreligious, relativist framework and we can now see how Mr. Putin and the current Russian government is going along with that vision of reversal. If what Mr. Gorbachov began was allowed to slide into this unchecked and irresponsible freedom, Russia could have it worst than the West today in godless decadence. The World Wide Anglican Church better pay attention and ponder because for Solzhenitsyn, culture dulls our theological senses and warps our moral minds.

When the leaders of the Anglican Church in UK, Canada and the USA as well as those who are advocating alternative life-styles and twisting the Scriptures to their own detriments understand freedom biblically, then we all would truly be able to embrace God's grace. This 'Grace' does not confirm or console us in our sins but is the means to restore us to all we lost in Adam and as the enabling power to make us live above all that appeals to our basic carnal nature with its grossly twisted sexual appetites which is nothing more that mere bondage.

God liberated Solzhenitsyn in the gulag. God is also able to liberate us from 'ourselves' and make know what is true freedom. "It was only when I lay there on rotting prison straw that I sensed within myself the first stirrings of good," Solzhenitsyn wrote in The Gulag Archipelago. Indeed, this stirrings of good was felt be many during this last Lambert Conference when the Archbishop of Sudan and the other Orthodox Bishops made their moral and authoritative positions clear.

Yet, this Lambert Conference if examined from the eyes of Mr. Alexandr Solzhenitsyn left us with one glaring but bitter lesson. It is that the Anglican Church as we know it today still has a clear line separating good and evil which passes not through states, nor between classes, nor between political parties either-but right through every human heart-and through all human hearts. God will still save the Anglican Church world-wide.
