Orthodox Canadian Anglicans Express Full Support for Bishop of Recife

Anglican Essentials Canada denounces the actions taken by the Primate of Brazil to depose the Bishop of the Diocese of Recife

TORONTO (6/20/2005)-- While 800 orthodox Canadian Anglicans gathered at the Anglican Essentials Conference in Toronto this past week to support orthodox Anglicanism in Canada, Bishop Robinson Cavalcanti of the Diocese of Recife, was deposed by the Primate of Brazil for his orthodox beliefs.

Anglican Essentials Canada agreed with the statement of Archbishop Gregory Venables of the Southern Cone, that the action "reflects a profound disregard and disrespect of the call for restraint and patience from the Primates of the Anglican Communion" and Essentials expresses its full support for the bishop and diocese of Recife.

The Standing Committee of the Diocese of Recife held an emergency meeting and has announced that it will appeal the sentence to the Anglican Province of Brazil, as well as to the Primates of the Anglican Communion. They further stated they will continue to recognize Bishop Cavalcanti, and will refuse to recognize any other bishop the Province might send to replace him.

Anglican Essentials Canada stands firm with our brothers and sisters from the Diocese of Recife, rejects the actions of the Province of Brazil and will continue to acknowledge the ministry and standing of Bishop Cavalcanti. Essentials also extends our prayers to those holding steadfast to the Gospel of Jesus Christ throughout Brazil.

The actions of the Province of Brazil will only serve to deepen the crisis in the worldwide Anglican Communion even as attempts to find a resolution are being sought.
