COLORADO: Concerned Clergy and Laity Demand Full Accounting in Diocesan Battle

COLORADO: Concerned Clergy and Laity Demand Full Accounting in Diocesan Battle

April 2, 2007

TO OUR BROTHERS AND SISTERS IN CHRIST IN COLORADO:

The Steering Committee of 'The Communion Laity And Clergy Of Colorado' wishes to clarify our understanding of the circumstances surrounding the statements and actions of The Reverend Donald Armstrong with relevance to the serious allegations put forward by the Bishop and Standing Committee of the Diocese of Colorado.

Fr. Armstrong has been a member of our fellowship, as have many parishioners of Grace and St. Stephen's.

The Bishop and Standing Committee have been accused of initiating an inquiry into the stewardship and administration of Grace and St. Stephen's with the intention of crippling, defaming, silencing or otherwise taking over an orthodox priest and parish.

They have been accused of animus and bias against Fr. Armstrong.

We want you and the faithful around the world to know that two CLC members serve on the Standing Committee.

They have witnessed the canonical process and support the Presentment.

Sadly, mistrust in the councils of the church is at such a low point that it is difficult to know whom to believe during periods when the needs of confidentiality and due process limit communications.

Whatever the final outcome of these heartbreaking events, we do not believe that charges have been trumped up and methods embraced to silence an outspoken critic of the diocese.

We urge others to see the wisdom and care taken in this process.

We are also ready to acknowledge any evidence that refutes these allegations against our colleague.

Still we are concerned that the presumption of innocence given him by that same process has been compromised.

We pray fervently that a full and complete accounting, and reconciliation, will be made to the people of the Diocese and the family now divided at Grace and St. Stephen's.

We will continue to pray for Fr. Armstrong and his family, for Grace and St. Stephen's, the Bishop and the Diocese of Colorado.

Communion Laity and Clergy is an association of laity and clergy in the Diocese of Colorado committed to orthodox witness and reform within the Episcopal Church.

We work to uphold the unity of biblical faith and historic order of the church as constituent members of the Anglican Communion.
