The Appalling Sexual Hypocrisy of the Episcopal Church

COMMENTARY

It happened again this week.

The Bishop of Lexington, one Douglas Hahn, a straight white male, was caught in a lie about an affair he had with a parishioner, confessed and repented of his sin, has now been removed from active ministry as a bishop for one calendar year until March 9, 2017. He will also lose his diocesan pay check. Now, with five months to go, the Diocese Standing Committee has decided it doesn't want the bishop to return. He can stay away ... permanently.

The hypocrisy of this act cannot be stated severely enough.

We have a bishop (Gene Robinson) who was married to a woman, had two kids by her, divorces her after announcing he was a homosexual, unmarries her in a bizarre altar scene, meets a man, marries him and then divorces him 25 years later, and The Episcopal Church thinks this is just fine because Robinson and his ilk manage to get a series of General Convention resolutions passed that endorses his behavior!

So it is okay to be a homosexual, bisexual, (you can go both ways now with the approval of the Church), lesbian, transgendered, (there are two priests married to each other in the Diocese of Massachusetts who have had sex change operations and are now married to each other) and the list goes on and on. All of this meets with the approval of the Episcopal thought police. But God help you if you are a straight white male and momentarily lapse...you are history.

Why did nobody ask what the relationship was of the besotted former associate Bishop of Maryland, Heather Cook (who killed a cyclist while drunk), and her relationship with a former priest from the Diocese of Connecticut who spotted her a ton of bail money while she pled her case. No one said a word.

Or what about the former Bishop of New York, one Richard Grein, who dumped his wife, and had an affair with a woman whom he later married! Then Presiding Bishop Frank Griswold swept it all under the rug and Grein drifted into retirement without a blemish on his record. He still collects a pension.

Then, of course, there was Bishop James Pike, married three times, a known womanizer, who never got disciplined by the House of Bishop over his multiple affairs, because he had achieved celebrity status in the media with his bizarre beliefs. He was apparently untouchable.

Bishop Horace W. B. Donegan, the Episcopal Bishop of New York from 1950 until 1972, used to cruise New York's gay bars. No one said a word.

And, of course, there was the former Bishop of New York, Paul Moore, whose affairs with women AND men were well known, but kept secret till his daughter blew the whistle on him in a book about her father.

And let us not forget the sexual misconduct of Bishop David E. Johnson of Massachusetts, who committed suicide two weeks after it was disclosed he had been involved in several extramarital affairs throughout his ministry.

Then, Presiding Bishop Edmond L. Browning, said some of the relationships "appear to have been of the character of sexual exploitation." Really.

Fast forward to the poor VII Bishop of Lexington. He had a brief affair with a woman years ago, is not getting divorced, has asked for forgiveness, but will now get the heave-ho...forever. Welcome to the bizarre world of Episcopal sexual hypocrisy Mr. Hahn, you've just joined an exclusive club of adulterers. You are a special unforgivable sinner. You've should have said you were a homosexual and they would have given you an honorary doctorate at the fading Episcopal Divinity School, Gene Robinson would have eulogized you for your honesty and Michael Curry would have offered you a job as his Sexual Advisor in New York City. Instead, you have been screwed because you are hetero and now you are history.
