The Rev. Howard White, former rector of Grace Episcopal Church in the Mountains, has been accused of sexual misconduct that allegedly occurred during his time in Waynesville,NC.

The allegation came to light following the news that White was involved in sexual misconduct that occurred at St. George's School, a private prep academy in Rhode Island that has come under scrutiny after several former students spoke up about their experiences at the school.

Following the allegation by former students, St. George's conducted an investigation, published in late December, revealing incidents of abuse at the school from the 1970s and 80s.

In the report, White is identified only as Employee Perpetrator #2, but was later named by the attorney for the victims, Eric MacLeish, by matching victim statements with the account published.

According to the report, White "was employed at St. George's until 1974, when he abruptly left the school after a report to the school of his inappropriate conduct with a male student."

The report goes on to state that he had inappropriate contact with at least three male students, which he admitted to when confronted.

The incident was not reported to authorities at the time, however, school administration "tried to prevent this employee from getting another job that would involve contact with students."

White served as rector at Grace Church in the Mountains from 1984 to 2006. He has since retired, but was recently serving on a volunteer basis in Bedford, Pennsylvania.

According to a statement released by the Diocese of Central Pennsylvania, "At this time he has been suspended from exercising any priestly duties."

Grace Church was informed of this latest news by Rt. Rev. G. Porter Taylor, Bishop of the Diocese of Western North Carolina, which was forwarded to the congregation by Jim Dannals, interim rector, via email on Feb. 5.

The bishop's letter expresses the difficult news that the allegations against White extend to his time at Grace Church. He goes on to say that a woman has come forward with allegations that she had been sexually abused by White during his tenure as rector, while she was a minor.

Taylor said, "I received that with many emotions and with a renewed commitment for our Diocese to do all it can to aid in the investigation, to console any who are abused or hurt, to respect our ecclesiastical disciplinary process while pushing for a speedy resolution, and to pray to the Lord that justice be done and that the Holy Spirit console all who are harmed as well as give us all hope for a renewed world."

Taylor said the church has taken immediate action in response to these allegations by reaching out to the alleged victim, offering support and counseling aid, in addition to reporting these allegations to the district attorney's office and police.

Waynesville Police Chief Bill Hollingsed confirmed that his office had been notified of the report as of Feb. 3.

"We are in the early stages of an investigation into this matter. Respecting the needs of the victim are our number one priority at this time," he said.

Dannals, who recently took over leadership of the church following the retirement of Rev. Arlene Lukas said, "The people of Grace Church are deeply saddened by these allegations. It is not our job or responsibility to determine guilt, but rather to care for each other in our sadness over these allegations."

He said at this time the church is referring all inquiries to the two letters that have been published by the bishop, the first announcing the allegations at St. George's School and the second announcing allegations against White in Waynesville.

The church is encouraging anyone else who may have experienced, or is aware of abuse to come forward.

"It is important that we have a full understanding of any misconduct that may have occurred to others so that we can do our best to support them.," Bishop Taylor said.

Anyone wishing to report such misconduct are encouraged to contact Canon Jim Pritchett by email at jimpritchett1@icloud.com or by phone at 828-450-7500.

The investigation is ongoing, in Rhode Island and in Waynesville. No charges have been filed at this time.
