Unfolding Spiritual Disaster at Christian Today

When Christian Today appointed a new editor in 2014, who could have predicted that a year later this once soundly evangelical site would publish an article that put the Christian Bible on a par with the Koran as a source of spiritual authority?

But a comment piece (http://www.christiantoday.com/article/steve.chalke.its.time.to.be.a.blessing.to.refugees/66426.htm) by the Rev. Steve Chalke on the European refugee crisis has done just that:

"We all know that the founding father to whom Christianity and Islam, as well as Judaism, trace their roots is, of course, Abraham. And that, as both Genesis and the Qur'an record, as part of his calling he was given a great promise and challenge by the one God of everyone:

'I [God] will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.' (Genesis 12: 2-3)

'He [Allah] said, "I am appointing you as the leader of mankind." ' (Qur'an 2:124)"

Not only does this put Holy Scripture on a par with the Koran, it also puts the one true God whom the Christian Scriptures reveal, namely the God and Father of the Lord Jesus Christ, on a par with Allah.

This is surely the unfolding of a spiritual disaster on a site read by committed evangelical Christians attending the more vibrant churches of various denominations in the UK.

Christian Today has a soundly evangelical basis of faith, which includes commitment to the Trinity, to the divine inspiration of the Bible and to "the atoning sacrifice of Christ on the cross: dying in our place, paying the price of sin and defeating evil, so reconciling us with God".

But some time recently - an enquiry to the new editor as to precisely when got no reply - CT introduced the following preamble to its basis of faith:

"We are evangelical at heart (read our basis of faith here - http://www.christiantoday.com/aboutus#faith ). However we are passionate about bringing the whole Church together and helping Christians of different denominations and groupings to learn from each other. To this end, you will find a range of voices, views and opinion on this site, not all of which will be considered orthodox evangelical."

We are evangelical but....That is how the theological downgrade process unfolds. And in the Rev. Chalke's terrible equation it has yielded toxic spiritual fruit.
