Thoughts on the Primates' Meeting in Canterbury

On 1/14/2016 the Primates released a statement which began as follows: "Today the Primates agreed how they would walk together in the grace and love of Christ."

The Bibles says, "Can two walk together, except they be agreed?" (Amos 3:3)

The results were dismaying:

1. TEC got a slap on the wrist, while still being recognized as a branch of the Church, despite persecuting the orthodox by defrocking faithful priests and going to law against faithful congregations (contrary to Scripture), having leaders who openly teach heresy, and endorsing sodomy;

2. TEC has been promised another three years of this status;

3. There still has been no action whatsoever against the Canadian Anglican Church's endorsement of sodomy and rejection of Biblical teaching, or against other provinces or congregations holding similar heretical positions;

4. Their still has been no action from the ABC about recognizing the growing ACNA, which plants more new churches and does more evangelizing than the entire declining TEC;

5. Bible-believing GAFCON primates are virtually "sent empty away," with merely a mess of gracious-speak Anglican fudge.

I realize that good-hearted people within the communion hope to see all eventually come together in a new unity. No doubt most good Primates want to see the Anglican Communion saved. But the question is, has the Titanic already hit the iceberg? Should we all hope for the best and listen to the band play, or is it long past time to man the lifeboats? Should a body leave a gangrenous limb alone and wait for it to heal, or should he amputate to save the rest of the body? It is time to take a hard look at alternatives.

The issue is not merely brothers "overtaken in a fault" (Gal. 6:1) who just need more indaba; the problems in the liberal branches are egregious heresy, giving heed to "seducing spirits, and doctrines of demons." (1 Tim. 4:1), and blatant promotion (not just toleration) of immorality. When Paul heard of immorality in Corinth, he ordered the perpetrator to be excommunicated-- "deliver such a one unto Satan" (1 Cor. 5:5)-- not to "indaba with him." He said, "Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump? Purge out therefore the old leaven." (1 Cor. 5:6-7)

No doubt most of the Primates are motivated by a sincere desire to save the Communion for the glory of God, evangelism, and good works; but is it possible some Anglican leaders are more concerned with pleasing men, or keeping cash flowing from heretical branches, or political pressure to continue spreading their unbiblical teachings?

The Church should not be like a thermometer, merely registering and parroting current cultural opinions, but like a thermostat, doing its best to regulate, or at least present to the culture, sound doctrine and Godly teaching

The See of Canterbury has consistently refused to enforce the discipline called for by the Primates at Dar es Salaam in 2007. That's 9 long years ago. The Primates also spoke with unified voice when they approved Lambeth 1:10 way back in 1998, a full 18 years ago.

The Bible does not say, "a heretic tolerate for 18 years, then give him three years more to repent." It says, "A man that is a heretic after the first and second admonition reject." (Titus 3:10) Is the Bible authoritative? Should we obey it?

The Bible does not say, "If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, indaba for 18 years, then suggest he reconsider for three more years." The Bible says, "If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed: For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds." (2 John 1:10-11)

Unity is nice, but truth is essential. Truth is what a faithful Church seeks, disseminates, and guards; unity is useful to truth, but unity based on untruth is confusion, infidelity, and a betrayal of righteousness. You can tie two cats together by the tail and have unity, or at least union, but what good would that be? A watching world, including Muslims, must marvel that Anglican clergymen who revere the Bible and advocate Biblical sexuality would want to remain in union with clergymen who reject Biblical authority and advocate sodomite "marriage."

The Bible refers to "false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. . . Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works. (2 Corinthians 11:13-15) Just who might this be referring to?
