Bishop Wantland Requests Honorary Membership in Episcopal House of Bishops

Exclusive Report

By David W. Virtue

11/18/2008

The retired Bishop of Eau Claire, the Rt. Rev. William Wantland has asked the Presiding Bishop of The Episcopal Church, Katharine Jefferts Schori to make him an honorary member of the House of Bishops.

In a letter to the Presiding Bishop, obtained by VirtueOnline, the Assisting Bishop of the Diocese of Ft. Worth said that because the Diocese of Ft. Worth has voted to affiliate with the Province of the Southern Cone of America, severing its connection with The Episcopal Church, that he is now canonically affiliated with the Southern Cone and its Primate, The Most Rev. Gregory Venables.

Bishop Wantland, a canon lawyer, said that he has a right to be an honorary member of the HOB, in accord with the provisions of Rule XXIV of the House of Bishops, as provided in paragraph three of said Rule, as a "Bishop of this Church who removed from the jurisdiction of this Church to a jurisdiction of a Church in the Anglican Communion".

"I am not resigning my Orders, nor am I abandoning the communion of The Episcopal Church, being a member of a sister Province of the Anglican Communion, in compliance with the provisions of Canon IV.9. However, because I am no longer a member of The Episcopal Church, although residing within its jurisdiction in Oklahoma, I am no longer eligible to be a regular member of its House of Bishops. I therefore request that I be admitted as an honorary member of the (TEC) House of Bishops."

As at this time of posting, no response had been forthcoming from the Presiding Bishop.

Does he really think Mrs Schori will honor his request....let alone even read it?

I am certainly not a rocket scientist or have crystal ball, but I can tell you her answer: A big NO!

Probably the only thing Bp Wantland's request will do is allow Schori to disregard yet another provision of the canons. Shouldn't be long before she has had the opportunity to disregard them all.

It sounds like Bishop Wantland needs to read up on that part of Scriptures that talks about being a slave with two masters.

Is Bp Wantland kidding? How can membership in TEC's HOB be an honor? It is really a Dishonorary membership. Sounds to me like he is just sticking his thumb in her eye.

First Prelate Elvira Gultch! will call her lawyer, next she'll be stymied as to what Wantland's intentions really are. The intrigue thickens. Wouldn't it send her into hot flashes if about 4 more dioceses were to plan to simultaneously secede from TEC!! TEC would go into hock just on the legal suits to retrieve all the property!!!! Has anybody noticed she espouses this magical baptismal theology that makes every baptised person an automatic practicing "faithful"?

Sounds like Bishop Wantland may be setting her up to reveal a little bit more of her true personality and vindictive nature.

Bishop Wantland is no one's fool, either spiritually or politically. Therefore, I can only assume that there may be a purpose that is not yet fully obvious. Perhaps, he is testing the canons, or allowing KJS the opportunity to break the canons yet one more time, or to proclaim that depositions of clergy removed to the Southern Cone are unwarranted.

He has requested that which is rightfully his.

There must be a reason for this. He is one of the top experts on canon law around. It might have something to do with the new province. Who knows. I doubt it's just for fun. There must be more to it.

Ikerliker, you got it. Look at +Wantlands picture; the smile on his face. He's jerking her chain. TEc probably had to read these blogs to figure it out!

It sounds like Bishop Wantland is challenging her to a duel. If she says no, on what grounds? He will make her look like the duplicious idiot that she is. Deposing him for abandoning communion is what she really wants to do, but can she under these circumstances? Don't ask DBB, he would say she can because she is what she is, whatever that happens to be.

+Wantland knows that -Schori has trashed God's Holy Book. My opinion...as a cononical scholar, he's trying to goad her into trashing the canons of what's left of the EcUSA. (Do you think that +Wantland would enjoy a one-on-one with Beers?)

If the presiding heretic declines his request, as worded, she is effectively admitting to not being in communion with the Province of the Southern Cone and will proceed with deposition.

The HoB would have egg on their face over the prior depositions if she were to agree to the request which would be canonically correct.

A no-win situation for the PH.

Judging by that look on Bishop Wantland's face, I'd say he relishes a knockdown drag-out fight with Mrs Schori!

In that case, let her do what she will, and have done with it. He'll make her look like a fool, regardless!

I'm not sure what Wantland's objective is but I smile at several senarios.

I have oft complained that though Jesus admonished us to be as sly as serpents but harmless as doves, we are most often harmless as doves, excellently, but we are not sly as serpents but rather as dumb as an ox. Wantland is a sly one.
