CANTERBURY-A leading orthodox bishop of The Episcopal Church has proposed canceling the 2009 Episcopal Church General Convention in order to fund the United Nations' Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
Following the Thursday march on London by over 600 Anglican bishops and their spouses in support of the MDGs, the Rt. Rev. Keith Ackerman, Bishop of Quincy, said that "there should be no General Convention this year, and all the money for the convention should be sent to fund the goals."
Ackerman furthermore called for The Episcopal Church to "cancel all meetings that require face to face and conduct nothing but video conferencing." He said that the American wing of the Anglican Communion should "donate its money to churches that would be positively affected."
Though leaders of The Episcopal Church have stated their commitment to the MDGs and made their biggest stand yet in London on Thursday, Ackerman has doubts that The Episcopal Church has yet made a true commitment.
"If the church is absolutely, totally committed to these goals, there are three things it needs to do," Ackerman said.
"First, place the goals in the context of the Gospel itself.
"Second, leaders must make the necessary changes in their own personal lifestyle so that they can make their own commitment to model what God wants done.
"Third, the church must corporately find a way to fund this."
In response to Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori's invitation to African bishops to join her for drinks at a Canterbury reception (despite the Sudanese bishops' abstinence from alcohol), Ackerman offered a specific MDG funding proposal. "Do not invite the Sudanese to a reception. Cancel the reception and give the money to the Sudanese church."

Well done! Rt. Rev. Ackerman has done a lovely job of calling their bluff. Let's see what the response will be.

Well, it seems to me that no TEC bishop can be called "orthodox" who stays in TEC.
Another thread relates that there is basically no connection between MDG goals and the Great Commission. What does the Anglican Communion stand for anyway these days and why should it be saved? |

The UN, money, and trust...in the same sentence is a frightening thing.

In a version of fiddling while Rome burns, “over 600 Anglican bishops and spouses marched through the streets of London on Thursday” demonstrating support for UN MDGs as they are convened at Lambeth 2008 attempting to ignore a great moral and theological travesty that has a far greater import and consequence to the Christian world.
Here is another diversion from the business at hand, the greater issue specified at Lambeth 1998 regarding the homosexual insurrection as manifested in ECUSA/TEC. Yes Rome is burning, and there the metaphor is complete as it pertains to the Anglican Communion. The Communion’s Episcopate, dressed in the dreadful gowns of apostasy, bring a once great church to ruin, destroyed in the flames of betrayal of Jesus Christ and His Holy Spirit. ABC fiddles while Schori and the cast of militant homosexuals applaud. Forget the MDGs, cancel the Covention, get on to the business of saving some remnant of the Communion to do the more important task of serving God and savings Anglican Saints from the debacle of the homosexual incursion! |

Good idea. And as an added plus--don't attach any "strings" to the contribution. |

Cancel their silly convention? Sure. But, please DO NOT send a cent to the UN!!! Give it to the Red Cross, Rescue Missions, but NOT the UN.

"So called 'orthodox'", huh?
In the interest of fairness and morbid curiousity, I would like you to explain this cheap shot before I take some of my own. Calling my bishop a "so called orthodox", smacks of ignorance. So please, respond and explain it. Crusader44 |

They will spend yours and others money as they damn well please, thank you. What an absurd idea, canceling the open bar at the reception. Nothing is designed to take on the role that alcohol and loose lips play in the Indaba process. Just think where we would be without booze and Indaba! You know Paul Moore always drank heavy before he got the inspirations to speak truth to power in his sermons. A booze haze is next to divine revelation. Ommmmmmmmmmmm.....

Bishop Ackerman is innocent as a dove and shrewd as a serpent.
No Convention > No Innovations > No Changes to Diocese Constitutions by TEC |

If for nothing else, the convention 2009 should be cancelled due to global warming.....you know that there is just extreme hot air coming out of that meeting hall.
Another reason is to send the money to feed the children in africa and other places, plus give the money to combat HIV infections. Who needs to have VOL bombarded with stories of Gene Robinson and other stupid things going on anyway. |

Bishop Ackerman is not "so called orthodox". He IS orthodox, Anglo-Catholic and does not ordain women. So your comment is way off base.

Yes, I should apologize for a cheap shot I suppose; yet I wonder how anyone can be called "orthodox" (forgetting got the moment the Eastern Orthodox aspect of the name) who stays as part of TEC.

How can Bishop Ackerman be orthodox and stay in TEC following directives from TEC leadership? There is more to orthodoxy than WO.

Since you obviously don't know Bishop Ackerman or what he's all about, you might want to educate yourself before making further comment.
He is not a one issue bishop. You can learn more about him by going to the Diocese of Quincy website. There are sermons and articles that will illustrate that he is a deeply devoted Christian man who loves Jesus Christ, first and foremost. He has been fighting an uphill battle against these innovations for years trying to work for reform from within. I don't think he'll be part of TEc much longer anyway so soon it will be a non issue soon. |
