JERUSALEM: Double Speak Diplomacy in "Unity" Remarks by Jerusalem Bishop to GAFCON Leaders

By David W. Virtue

6/22/2008

In a strained, invitation-only service that saw much diplomatic feinting and ecclesiastical double-talk, the Bishop of Jerusalem, the Rt. Rev. Saheil Dawani, delivered a rebuke to leaders and pilgrims of the Global Anglican Fellowship Conference (GAFCON) saying that the unity of the Anglican Communion lay with the Archbishop of Canterbury.

In stern language, that reflected censure rather than welcome, Dawani told pilgrims gathered at St. George's cathedral that "in this diocese, we regard relationships across the Anglican Communion as a crucial network of bridges on the international scene that bring together Anglicans of 164 countries and 38 provinces worldwide, all of which support and strengthen our witness and mission."

The Jerusalem bishop recently replaced the corrupt former Bishop of Jerusalem, Riah Abu El-Assal. Not once did he mention the issues that currently divide the Anglican Communion, nor did he mention GAFCON by name. Also present at the service was the Bishop of Colorado, the Rt. Rev. Rob O'Neill, who is not a GAFCON pilgrim, but who sat next to the Apostolic Nuncio at the service.O'Neill's presence with Dawani sends a loud signal that the Episcopal Church is watching through its proxy bishop who is not permitted to participate at GAFCON.

In a clear slap at GAFCON bishops, Dawani said, "pilgrims do not bring decisions with them. "They come here to seek prayerfully the decisions God wants them to make. God has not finished with us or with our Church."

He urged his listeners to work for peace in Jerusalem and the world. "I pray God's blessing on you, on the Archbishop of Canterbury and on our Anglican Communion."

In unprepared remarks, the Roman Catholic Papal Nuncio Archbishop Antonio Franco, told the orthodox Anglican pilgrims that he hoped for unity. Jesus prayed for and urged his hearers "to be careful not to break unity." It is our commitment to keep unity in all the churches, he said. He wished the GAFCON conference "spiritual renewal" as "you return to your roots."

One woman theologian noted that the Apostolic Delegate's speech was very different from that delivered by former Roman Catholic Cardinal Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict, XVI, to the Dallas Plano gathering of some 4,000 orthodox Episcopal priests October 2003.

Has the Vatican gone cold on Anglican orthodoxy, mused one observer?

In his remarks, Nigerian Archbishop Peter Akinola said conference pilgrims are engaged in the work of God in the fulfillment of prophecy.

Addressing The Anglican Communion, Akinola said, "As a family there are problems and they are ours to solve. This week we seek to know the mind of God and the power to go about solving our family problems. God has given us the Holy Spirit to solve these problems.

"GAFCON is not a threat to you; we want to be your friend in the work of the Lord in Jerusalem. We want to be a blessing to you and the Christian community in Jerusalem." A stony faced Dawani did not respond.

There were no photo ops. Dawani did not greet the whole conference because, as one primate noted, "he doesn't understand it."

I don't think that there's the least bit of doubt as to whom Dawani answers to....and it ISN'T CHRIST, evidently. He answers to whomever holds the purse strings, and in this case, it's clearly Schori and Company.

I don't think he makes a move without asking permission first....and that's why Schori sent a "minder" in the form of +Rob O'Neill. Dawani's remarks have "Schori and Company" implicitly all through them.

Dawani is ****'s sock puppet undergoing a perpetual prostate exam. He does nothing without Kate's permission or direction. He has been bought, paid for and is owned by TEF (The Episcopal Franchise).

About the only significance of Dawani's speech is to clearly highlight the continuing intransigence of the revisionists led by Hades' little helper Katie-in-the-clown-suit.

That Dawani would use such an occasion to insult his guests speaks of complete uncivility as one of the bedrock tennents of eastern/arabic behavior is unfailing civility to one's guests - whether or not you intend to stab them in the back later on. Must have been instructions from 815, the HQ of uncivility.

Ab Akinola says "GAFCON is not a threat to you;..."

Actually, he's wrong on this. GAFCON, by its very happening, is a threat to anyone in the AC that has revisionist practices and teachings. If anything, the entire AC is being put on notice: either follow the historical teachings of the Bible, or go your own separate ways.

At least TWO provinces of the Communion have chosen to go their own way; we know who they are....and the Church of England isn't far behind them! And they'll be followed by the Churches in Scotland and Wales.

Re: JERUSALEM: Double Speak Diplomacy in "Unity"...
So, it is to be "unity" over God's Truth, "peace" over God's Righteousness, Canterbury over God's eternal Word? There is no Gospel in that treacherous tradeoff!

The prophet Jeremiah's word here ring eerily contemporary--words first uttered in Bp. Dawani's own city of Jerusalem:

Because from the least of them even to the greatest of them, everyone is given to covetousness; and from the prophet even to the priest, everyone deals falsely. They have also healed the hurt of My people slightly, saying, ‘Peace, peace!’ when there is no peace.

Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? No! They were not at all ashamed; nor did they know how to blush. Therefore they shall fall among those who fall; at the time I punish them, they shall be cast down, says the LORD.

Thus says the LORD: Stand in the ways and see, and ask for the old paths, where the good way is, and walk in it; then you will find rest for your souls. But they said, ‘We will not walk in it.

(Jeremiah 6: 13-16)

Whatever Dawani may be he certainly isn't 'conservative' in the sense of being a Bible-believer. The only true unity ANY church can find is in Jesus Christ - this man's suggestion that unity lies in the ABC shows that he shares the heresy with the Church of Rome of placing man before God.

He would be advised to go away and read his scriptures, then to follow Christ and His Words - that way will lie unity and that way only.

Saheil Dawani is demonstrably an 815 lackey. TEc money and favor buy ungrudging faithfulness.

Would anyone care to place a bet on whether or not these so-called "indaba groups" were Schori's idea? This whole ridiculous mess has her stupid trademarks written all over it!

Wear down the opposition with endless talk, talk, and more talk until they get the point and give in! "Kill 'em with talk!"

Sorry, Kate! YOU LOSE!

"In unprepared remarks, the Roman Catholic Papal Nuncio Archbishop Antonio Franco, told the orthodox Anglican pilgrims that he hoped for unity. Jesus prayed for and urged his hearers "to be careful not to break unity." It is our commitment to keep unity in all the churches, he said. He wished the GAFCON conference "spiritual renewal" as "you return to your roots.""

Again, the same pattern keeps emerging - no Papal encouragement for orthodoxy per se, only for "unity". It appears that the wind has changed since 2003.

In fact, unity is a big issue at Gafcon, although probably not in the sense that +Dawani or the Papal Nuncio intend: There are as many different shades of belief in Anglicanism as there are in Roman Catholicism or any other -ism. Some differences are important; some are not. Pray that those at Gafcon are given wisdom and forebearance to work through the differences and see what must be agreed upon in order to continue.
