Gays are "Deeply Unhappy": Russian Orthodox Priest Warns of Dangers of Homosexual "LifeStyle"

By Hilary White

MOSCOW, June 10, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - After illegal Gay Pride marches went ahead in Moscow earlier this month, homosexualist activists are condemning the Russian Orthodox Church for asserting Christian teaching on sexuality and suggesting that homosexual people do not have to live the "gay lifestyle".

One member of the Orthodox Church, Father Vsevolod Chaplin, recently said of homosexuals, in an interview with newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda, "Such people are deeply unhappy".

"I know it from confessions and numerous life stories. It's not by chance that they die earlier and there're more suicides, drug addicts and alcoholics among them," he said.

Fr. Chaplin's comments are backed by research, widely accepted by the homosexual community, showing that homosexuals suffer from higher than average rates, not only of sexually transmitted diseases, but of psychological disorders, drug addiction and suicide. Whereas those who are opposed to homosexuality assert that such stats demonstrate the inherently destructive nature of the homosexual lifestyle, homosexuals counter that the real cause of such statistics is that homosexuals are oppressed and therefore become depressed and abuse drugs, etc.

"The Church lovingly accepts everyone, including those who have passion for people of the same sex. But just because she loves them, she says unisexual love is a sin. A destructive sin," said Fr. Chaplin.

Thus far the homosexual movement has refused to accept the distinction being made by Fr. Chaplin, between the person suffering from homosexual temptations and homosexual activity itself, the latter which the Church has always condemned as immoral. The pro-homosexual news source, Pinknews.com, ran a story about Fr. Chaplin's remarks with a headline that reflects the gay community's assertion that there is no distinction between the person and the act: "Homosexuality a destructive sin, claims 'caring' Russian Orthodox Church".

Fr. Chaplin said he is "neither a homophobe nor a lesbianophobe" but felt he had to warn of the dangers of homosexuality.

In May, Yuri Luzkhov, Moscow's mayor, banned Gay Pride marches. But on June 1, a group of 30 homosexual activists staged a short protest in front of Moscow City Hall without being arrested. Later four activists were arrested at a Moscow apartment, held overnight and charged with taking part in an unauthorised demonstration and failing to obey police orders.

Homosexual activists had applied for permission to hold five marches a day every day of May. These applications were rejected by Moscow municipal authorities who said they would "endanger public order and cause negative reaction of the majority of the population".

The homosexual movement maintains that the condition of homosexuality is merely one variant of a range of natural human sexual expressions, no more or less legitimate than heterosexuality. Well documented pressure from homosexual activists in this vein resulted in the American Psychological Association removing homosexuality from its list of psychological disorders in 1973.

At the same time those who have left the lifestyle and their supporters are increasingly marginalized. In May this year, an ABC News report showed that people who have rejected the gay lifestyle often remain silent about their past life due to persecution from homosexual activists. Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays and Gays (PFOX) testify to having observed wide-scale persecution of ex-gays from those supportive of homosexuality.

"Many ex-gays are afraid to come out of the closet because of the harassment they will receive - their names, phone numbers and personal information posted on gay websites, attacked at ex-gay exhibit booths, press releases issued against them, etc," stated PFOX.

Even governments are engaging in what some are calling a "witch hunt" against Christians who express their opposition to the homosexual activist assertions. Iris Robinson, a Northern Irish MP and wife of the First Minister, is currently standing firm against calls for her resignation after she told BBC Radio Ulster that homosexuals could defeat their temptations and live normal lives. Robinson is the chairman of the Assembly health committee.

"I think at the moment there is a witch hunt to kerb or actually stop or prevent Christians speaking out and I make no apology for what I said because it's the word of God," said Robinson today.

Mrs. Robinson repeated that she condemns the "sin" of homosexuality but not the sinner.

"Just as a murderer can be redeemed by the blood of Christ so can a homosexual."

Northern Irish police are investigating whether Mrs. Robinson has committed any offence under the UK's incitement to hatred law after a string of complaints were made against the interview in which she condemned active homosexuality as immoral and suggested that homosexuals can change.

Number 1:
Many, many lies enshroud the gay delusion. One of the first is that self hatred is abandoned in order to embrace this identity. Consequently, all overt effort will first self-convince, and then outwardly convince, that all is well and indeed blissfully happy. I have seen many try to change, mostly within their own strength, only to fail and then later assert that they were "born this way" and have never known anything else.

"Besides, we are happier than most half-hearted heterosexual foul-ups!" and "I feel great!, how about you?"

Number 2:
Of those afflicted as 'gay', some may be 'reachable' in turning their lives around, while others are not. Underlying issues are rightly understood to be very complex, both relationally and psychologically. Our living and ascended Lord Jesus Christ is more than capable of washing and sanctifing these ones, as well as many others. The key? Placing Him first over other passions. God before groin, I say. But I also say that the way out is not easy. The most determined have greater success - and this is shown to be true, clinically.

In my own case, my naturally-inclined introversion led to a profound unhappiness, grown to self-hatred. I desired to curb my growing ravenous appetite for anonymous sexual encounters, but I did not know how to deal with what became sexually addicted behaviours. The ZACCHAEUS FELLOWSHIP describes some of these people as "the silent sufferers in the pews."

In generalist terms (for all struggles are individually unique), the person with a narcissistic and extroverted personality bent may not have the desire or willingness to examine and change behaviours, even with pastoral or clinical help.

Again, generally speaking, such individuals may be more inclined to participate in militent activism: the in-your-face demonstrations and lobbying groups. Some within the ZACCHAEUS FELLOWSHIP have been of this type, but have testimonies to share about how the Lord has redeemed even them, from areas of broken sexual and gender issues.

 Re: The Confessional
"I know it from confessions ..."

I know it may seem picky, but offhand general comments such as this hint at a priest in danger of violating the seal of the confession. Oddly enough, this disturbs me more than the content of the article.

Whether one chooses to "accept" the sacrament of penance or not, this is a disturbing thought coming from a priest in a church that does so.

Pray for us all.

Tim.

A priest saying he knows some particular thing based on years of hearing confessions and multiple incidenses of the same topic coming up, isn't violating the seal of the confessional. He is making a statement based on personal knowledge. This is one area that I would not consider to be "hearsay" just because it was heard and not witnessed.

Now, on to my original thought. I in many, in many ways too many years of working with alcoholics and drug addicts, I have learned quite a lot. Many of the people that I have worked with have confided homosexuality to me., I am not violating their confidence, my gosh, I am talking multiple hundreds of people in three states and five cities. They say they don't feel good about themselves. This is very typical of any alcoholic or addict, gay or straight. There is something missing, a big hole in the soul so to speak. The biggest motivator because of this hole seemsd to be fear. Fear of failure, fear of success, fear of loosing something I have, or fear of not getting what I want, fear of eternal damnation, fear of being "outed", you name it. All are trying to make it "go away" by drinking or drugging. BUT, it always comes back, and worse. Until something positive fills that hole in the soul, nothing gets better. Drink or drugs will not fill it, neither will a homosexual or any other kind of partner. Happiness is an inside job, and until I learned to be happy inside of me, nothing, drink drug, person or thing could make me happy. Until I let God in, I stayed miserable. This is what is needed for any person who is a SLAVE to sin of whatever variety.
None of the common afflictions of alcoholism, drug addiction, porn addiction, gambling problems and a whole other host of problems will ever be solved by participating more in the destructive behavior. God can and will come in to help with the problem. In my opinion to put it in a wordly way, God will steer, but he will NOT row the boat. I have to get up and do the footwork with his guidance to solve the problem.

There's just a little dissonance in that statement. If it's true, then the name "gay" is entirely misleading, a blatant case of false advertising.

How about "sads"? Or "not so gays"? "Les miserables"? (adds that Broadway show tune campness)

Maybe "predatory sexual narcissists"?

"Leading social indicators of societal collapse"?

-----

God grant us the wisdom and fortitude to return to the name that our forefathers in our Christian civilization had the righteous judgement to apply, and was in vigor until the disastrous later decades of the 20th Century:

"Criminals".

Re: Gays are "Deeply Unhappy": Russian Orthodox...
I see that our "Mister Leviticus" has no problem with the Law, but with mercy and compassion!

There is no shortage of the depth of inner suffering and struggle in a great many poor souls who endure all manner of repeated sinfulness that will not seem to 'let go' of a life. Jesus knew this. He has the capacity to pierce the grave clothes of darkness within each one of us. And we are to emulate Him... to show forth His example in our own lives, if we indeed can in some small way achieve this.

To each and every sinner, Jesus' love and compassion come first. His rebuke, if present at all, comes after. First, He respects the downtrodden (but not the Pharisee).

I must confess that the reason I share as I do, is to first offer a word of hope to those who struggle after a like-minded fashion. That 'washed' and 'sanctified' is available to all today, "that such were some of you" has potential to lead a person to a place beyond chains - but through "grace which is the gift of God, and not of ourselves".

A second motivator is to offer something of a resource to the Church. Part of the reason that we have such a vanguard of homosexual activism today, is that we have, collectively, had nothing to offer the homosexual struggler, other than to say "go and sin no more" or "we cannot help you, go away"! Many have received the prayer of release "from the demon of homosexuality"!

Gay bars are literally filled with people who have been treated like pariah by the church - and they are very angry. They do not know, and the Church knows too little, that it is within loving relationships that same-sex attraction is being sanctified and ultimately abandoned for something more wholesome! That long-lost deficits in relating, and the woundedness of the deep heart - that big, black hole - can be filled as all involved persevere in ministry and in healing.

Our Lord can lift the mantle of sin off of anyone He chooses, quite instantly, to fulfil His purpose in their life. I am aware of such testimony in others. But it is in others, yet again, whose struggle to freedom has been won at great perseverance, that has something altogether different to offer the one who has yet to find freedom from life-besetting patterns of sin.

All of us - every one - are "criminals" deserving death, if we have been given the grace to see it. But Christ came to show that this can become 'past tense' through His sacrifice upon Calvary, and in His sending of the Holy Spirit, within a godly family of believers.

It is achievable, life redeeming, and free.
I highly recommend it! It has proven to be the gift that lasts.

Excellent contributions ZachD!

Also

"Mercy" = Where God does not give us what we deserve.

"Grace" = Where God gives us what we do not deserve.

Jesus did this. Does this. Can you believe it!

Blessings

Re: Gays are "Deeply Unhappy": Russian Orthodox...
I don't disagree with the basic thesis of the argument that gays tend to be unhappy. My own experience with them has tended to bear that out.

I do have to say however that the situation here in Russia with regard to gays is very bad. I think it is ridiculous that they cannot get a permit for a demonstration. Of course, it isn't just the gays. Many groups that don't see eye to eye with the policies of United Russia can't effectively voice their opposition. Nonetheless, I think that vocal gays here run a real risk of being targets of physical violence.

The one good thing that gays here have going for them is that while average Russians don't much care for them, they also are very bad at recognizing them when the see them. There are a number of popular entertainers here who are almost certainly gay but the population is completely oblivious to it.
