NEWARK, NJ: Former NJ Governor McGreevey mulling Episcopal priesthood

The Star-Ledger
http://blog.nj.com/ledgerupdates/2007/05/mcgreevey_mulling_episcopal_pr.html
May 02, 2007

Former Gov. James E. McGreevey has started the process to become a priest in his newly adopted Episcopal faith and hopes to begin a three-year seminary program in the fall.

McGreevey, who often described himself as a devout Catholic while in public office, was officially received into the Episcopal religion on Sunday, at St. Bartholomew's Church in Manhattan, and is now part of the church's "discernment" phase that usually precedes any seminary work, said the Rev. Kevin Bean, vicar at St. Bartholomew.

"This process that he's in right now, is not going to be some snap of the finger, overnight process. That will not happen. That's not how it works. He knows that," Bean said. "And so at the parish level, and at the diocesan level, everyone knows that this is a process that ... intentionally is deliberate. You don't enter into it unadviseably."

McGreevey has already applied to the renowned General Theological Seminary in Manhattan and is awaiting word of whether he has been accepted to the program there, according to two people familiar with McGreevey's plans, who declined to be identified because McGreevey has not formally announced his plans.

McGreevey declined to comment today. Messages left for officials at the seminary were not immediately returned.

Those closest to McGreevey said they were not surprised to learn of the ex-governor's decision. "This is something he's been thinking about for years," said David France, who last year co-authored McGreevey's best-selling memoir, The Confession. "His spiritual life has always been central to who he is. From the time he was a kid, he thought about going into Catholic seminary a number of times. The idea of going into the Episcopal seminary has been in his mind for at least a couple of years."

McGreevey, 49, resigned in August 2004 after announcing he was gay and had an affair with a male staffer, who has denied it.

News of McGreevey's plans come a day after his estranged wife, former first lady Dina Matos McGreevey, released her own tell-all memoir, called Silent Partner: A Memoir of My Marriage. The McGreeveys are embroiled in a nasty divorce and custody battle, which has boiled over in recent weeks and led a Superior Court judge in Elizabeth to instruct the couple to use common sense and remember that their daughter will one day read everything they're saying about each other.

While in office, McGreevey's pro-choice political stance put him at odds with the Catholic church. And soon after his resignation, McGreevey began attending Episcopal services. A central point of contention between the McGreeveys in their divorce is whether their 5-year-old daughter, being raised Catholic by Matos McGreevey, should be allowed to accept communion while at services with her father.

Of the Episcopal discernment protocols, Bean said: "There's a whole process that takes place within his parish here at St. Bart's, of discernment. That is followed by a process of further discernment at the diocesan level, involving the bishop and all. The decison to go to seminary is part of a more thorough process of discernment to ordination. It's not just going to seminary that gets you ordained ... It's a pretty extensive."

He must go to seminary to insure his full indoctrination of no Biblical doctrine. Now if he was black or female, why then he could be right away elected to presiding bishop or bishop ala Barbara Harris. On second thought, maybe he is the female.

Give us your tired, your poor, your disgraced homosexual former governors!

Why should TEC waste all the time, money and energy? Let's just go ahead and make him a bishop now!

Encarta defines discernment as "keen, sound judgement; good taste and judgement" Seems a stretch to apply it to McGreavy. A great deal of time will be spent getting to know his classmates.
His joining TEC, while Albany TEC Bishop Herzog's going to the RC church is a straight player trade- no cash.
TEC better hang on to the money and the Real Estate, they damn sure cant trade for it. Bless, Raybo

He just became an Episcopalian 3 days ago!!!

See:
http://blog.nj.com/ledgerupdates/2007/05/mcgreevey_mulling_episcopal_pr.html

He also has been accepted into the Master of Divinity program at Manhattan's renowned General Theological Seminary, seminary spokesman Bruce Parker said in a statement this afternoon.

"He has met all of General's admissions requirements and, as with all students accepted for admission, his application was evaluated by a committee composed of faculty members and several students, along with the Director of Admissions. We look forward to welcoming him as a member of the General Seminary community," Parker said.

He will be welcomed with open arms. And just think, he'll be close to the retired bishop of Newark who could become his mentor. Possibly an accountability partnership.

In fact, I can see a bishop in the making on the short track......VGR would be elated.

May the saints preserve us!

This news is almost funny. First, he declares he's queer. Second he "converts" to Episcopal. Third he says he wants to be a priest. Fourth he applys to Bugger Prep. aka GTS.

Why does he even need to go through the redundant step of going to GTS? He knows nothing of theology or Christianity now, why should he go to a school to have it erased and replaced. He's already queer so he has all the qualifications for Bishop - queer and non-Christian. Kinda reminds me of "The Natural"

Just when you think things can't get any worse, the other shoe drops. Or pump in this case.

I wonder if Elton will sing at his ordination??

In all seriousness I heard about this at choir practice tonight. I work for a Lutheran Church and they were appalled. It certainly makes TEC a laughing stock. Evidently reporters were shaking their heads in disbelief while Jimmie was talking.

Another black eye for TEC.

If anyone is stupid enough to recommend this yoyo for what passes as a seminary, they deserve what they'll get if he ever makes it through the process and goes on to be ordained! Of course, the GLBT crowd will leap for joy at the idea of another gay priest, as usual!

Even Wolf Blitzer on CNN seemed amused by the report. He started off tonight with "you're never going to guess what Jim McGreevey is going to do now..." Having known McGreevey since high school, all I can say is one thing: it's another publicity stunt. Although I don't doubt that s/he'll be fast-tracked and promoted as the TEc's poster child of a loving caring, homosexual clergy parent. God help his daughters - and God help us all!

I told my spouse tonight that I am so glad that we left TEC/ECUSA (or whatever). I said that it is nothing more than a sad joke, and I am glad that we no longer claim to be associated with these pathetic losers. It has been over a year since we shook the dust off of our feet, and I am happier about that with each passing day.

The Star-Ledger wrote:
“McGreevey, who often described himself as a devout Catholic while in public office ...”

This shows that, like most practicing homosexuals, McGreevey is a liar: a practicing homosexual is not a “devout Catholic.” That doesn't mean McGreevey didn't think of himself as a devout Catholic—it means that he is deluded.

David France said:
“From the time he was a kid, he thought about going into Catholic seminary a number of times.”

Saying that McGreevey “thought about going into Catholic seminary” is the same as saying that he “thought about” becoming a Catholic priest. McGreevey's thinking about becoming a priest is like his thinking about himself as a devout Catholic: delusional. One does not become a devout Catholic just because one thinks about it, but because one is called to holiness: “as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct” (I Pet 1:15). One does not become a priest just because one thinks about it, but because priests are “called ... with a holy calling” (II Tim 1:9). McGreevey may have “thought about” becoming a priest, but was he “called” to the priesthood? McGreevey seems to have decided that he wants to become a priest for his own reasons, not to be answering a call to the priesthood. And that is the problem with at least most, if not all, of the liberal priests being ordained by TEC—they are following their own agenda, not the call of Christ.

The Star-Ledger wrote:
“A central point of contention between the McGreeveys in their divorce is whether their 5-year-old daughter, being raised Catholic by Matos McGreevey, should be allowed to accept communion while at services with her father.”

The McGreeveys' daughter is not just “being raised Catholic by Matos McGreevey”—she *is* a Catholic because she was baptized in and has been nurtured in that Church by mutual agreement. Catholics are only allowed to receive the Sacraments from Catholic priests (with a few exceptions in some circumstances). Therefore, James McGreevey's allowing and/or encouraging his daughter to receive communion while attending TEC services is an attempt to make her disobey and/or change her religion—which he does not have the right to do. But that's not the worst of it: TEC's doctrine and theology is incompatible with and undermines Catholic morality, so he should not be allowed to take her to TEC services without her mother's consent.

This is a good example of how misguided it was for the United States to make participating in the “sexual revolution” a civil right: we legalized McGreevey's right to commit adultery, his right to do it with other men, his right to divorce his wife because he has decided that he is a homosexual, and his right to expose his young daughter to his changed sexual preference—satisfying his own selfish urges to the detriment of his family, but without negative consequences in the family court system. Lord have mercy!

Christ is risen!

While running for office in NJ, McGreevey always tried to ingratiate himself with RC clergy, much to their annoyance. Interestingly, the pastor of the RC parish McGreevey attended - a priest who touted McGreevey as the next Jack Kennedy - was himself removed from the priesthood about 5 years ago on an allegation of molesting two boys - that priest's case is still pending a decision from Rome. "Birds of a feather..?" You'd better believe it.

Have you recently had to resign public office in disgrace over your moral character? Do you have a couple of divorces under your belt, including a recent one where your marriage was publicly exposed as a sham? Are you completely unrepentant about your moral character?

If you answered "yes" to all these questions, the all new The Episcopal Church welcomes you to become a priest, because we know you'll fit right in.

Not an Episcopalian? No problem! Your moral flaws are your guarantee of a fastrack to ordination. And we'll make sure that your stay in the limelight that you love so much, while earning a six-figure income funded by the trust endowments of rich dead guys. You'll have the last laugh on them.

And you won't have to worry about God meddling in your life and trying to transform you ... how inconvenient might that be? No, in The Episcopal Church, you can transform your god, and your god will learn from your experience ... our high priestess guarantees it -- by gosh, she's even willing to bet your soul on it.

But what about the Bible, you ask? Bible schmible! As we like to say, the church wrote the Bible and the church can re-write the Bible.

And what about salvation? Why, that could take an eternity! Have fun now. You can even celebrate a clown Eucharist if you want. Come and join us on Sundays and experience the spacious, wide, open feeling of an empty church.

If your soul has hit the bottom of the barrel of immoral and unethical behavior and if you have absolutely no desire to change, The Episcopal Church Welcomes You!

Christians need not apply.

Given his fame and the fact that he's gay, TEC will no doubt see to it that McGreevey hits the ground running. The TEC process toward ordination will be for him like being shot out of a cannon.

Re: NEWARK, NJ: Former NJ Governor McGreevey mulling Epis...
So ... to be qualified for the priesthood in TEC one must be a homosexual adulterer who habitually lied to and deceived his wife, children, and the public--while faithful, God-fearing, moral, heterosexual, married, orthodox aspirants are often turned down for ordination, or have to badger their non-supportive rectors for years to begin a discernment process? Surely, Satan is laughing all the way to the bank.

I want to encourage the VOL community to pray for all godly, believing, right-living seminarians who are trying hard to become the kinds of priests we all need and want--and for good Christian bishops to ordain them. Also, pray for the faculties, staff, and students at orthodox and evangelical seminaries such as Nashotah House and Trinity School for Ministry. They need our prayers and support!
