NEW YORK: Elton's B'Day Simply Divine. Singer toasted at cathedral bash

To err is Elton, to forgive is St. John the Divine.
Blustery rocker Sir Elton John, who recently described organized religion as "hateful" and worthy of being banned, was slated to whoop it up last night at the famed Morningside Heights cathedral in celebration of his 60th birthday.
Church officials apparently turned the other cheek to Sir John's disparaging comments, but some worshipers were still a little miffed.
"It's inappropriate that everyone will be drunk and flamboyant in the cathedral," said one peeved churchgoer yesterday.
Surveying the florists, sound technicians and decorators feverishly preparing the church, the world's largest Gothic cathedral, he complained, "I can't even find a pew to sit in."
The bacchanal for 400 guests included $18,000 worth of exotic flowers, 1,000 bottles of champagne and a large dessert mound of sticky toffee pudding - Sir Elton's favorite.
The stars which came out to sparkle for John's big night included Bette Midler, Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne, Donatella Versace, Michael Stipe, Jon Bon Jovi, Michael Caine, Richard Gere, Barbara Walters, Pierce Brosnan, Kid Rock, Liv Tyler, Whoopi Goldberg, and Rod Stewart.
Diane Sawyer and Emma Thompson showed up giggling arm and arm, and newlywed Elizabeth Hurley even cut short her honeymoon with hubby Arun Nayar to join the fracas.
The dress code was "elegant black tie" - a far cry from Sir Elton's 50th-birthday shindig, when he showed up for the costume ball in a $100,000 Louis XIV outfit, complete with a towering white wig.
This time, the affair was to be a lot more muted. Tasteful white flowers filled the church. And in keeping with the religious atmosphere, tables were adorned with silver drinking chalices.
The altar was set up as a stage for the performers, which included the trendy rock group Scissor Sisters, Sting and Paul McCartney.
And despite several mentions in both the U.S. and British press, organizers insist it came as a total shock to the singer.
"It's a surprise," said Interview magazine editor Ingrid Sischy, who planned the party with publisher Sara Brandt and John's hubby, David Furnish.
For Elton fans who weren't on the guest list, there's a sold-out charity concert tonight at Madison Square Garden to celebrate his milestone.
The church gathering comes a mere four months after the infamously outspoken John told a British newspaper that religion "promotes spite and hatred against gays."
"I would ban religion completely," he reportedly said, adding, "Organized religion doesn't seem to work. It turns people into hateful lemmings, and it's not really compassionate."

So now we're "hateful lemmings?" What in Hell was the dean thinking of when he let the cathedral be used for a rite of bacchanalia?

Cenndy references a "clown communion". For the benefit of those who may not already be familiar with what he is talking about, here is the full story. At first I thought it was a very strange "fake" photo. To my horror I found that it is absolutely genuine. It was taken on Trinity Sunday at Trinity Church Wallstreet in New York City in 2005. I checked their website and I believe the clown holding the bread is their current Rector the Rev. Dr. James Herbert Cooper. The Charlie Chaplin look-alike clown to his right appears to be The Rev. Cannon Anne Mallonee. The church's web link is:
http://www.trinitywallstreet.org/welcome/?staff The following link will take you to a site that has additional photos and a 75 minute streaming video of the entire "service". http://www.expagan.info/blog/?p=123 And orthodox Episcopalians here in America expect the AOB to come to their aid. In the event that guardian's "clown mass" pic gets snipped, the expagan*infoblog has more ghoulish photos. TEC loves Elton - Hurrah! "To err is Elton, to forgive is St. John the Divine." The pen is indeed mightier than the sword! |

Nothing new under the sun
1Ki 12:32 And Jeroboam ordained a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, like unto the feast that [is] in Judah, and he offered upon the altar. So did he in Bethel, sacrificing unto the calves that he had made: and he placed in Bethel the priests of the high places which he had made. 2Ki 23:4 And the king commanded Hilkiah the high priest, and the priests of the second order, and the keepers of the door, to bring forth out of the temple of the LORD all the vessels that were made for Baal, and for the grove, and for all the host of heaven: and he burned them without Jerusalem in the fields of Kidron, and carried the ashes of them unto Bethel. |

Why bother? Why even ask the question?. The non-christians have control. It's finished , over, done with. What was once a magnificent Church is now a cult of dancing baffons. And this extends from Williams down. Those who remain, on whatever pretext, deceive themselves and everyone else. Look on the bright side. There is a whole new word of opportunites in front of us. My wife and I, for example, are here in Mexico helping a 16 year old girl who is dying from aids. She has nothing. No support and her village has ostracized her. She is lying on a mud floor in an abandoned hut assisted by her grandmother who goes from house to house begging food. I know you will agree Cennyd.EVERBODY HAS THE RIGHT TO DIE WITH DIGNITY. A small group of us, orthodox Christians have found a bed, sheets , a supply of food and a companion to visit her on a regular bases. She even has a teddy bear. Now we are putting a roof on the hut, but we don't know who owns it, to keep out the rains when they return. Cennydd. This is what it is all about. This is living. And when I think of what those in the Episcopal Church, my Church for 70 odd years, have done with their resources, and opportunities, I shudder. ![]() |

I agree with you, john123. I mourn for what once was a respected Christian Church, but is now looked upon as an apostate society and country club. The depths of depravity to which so many of its members have sunk are enormous, and I believe that it is beyond salvation. Any hope that TEC will repent was tossed into the toilet at the last Bishops' Meeting.
I applaud your efforts to help this Mexican girl and her grandmother. Similar situations in so many parts of the country, where routine medical care is unavailable to the poor are not unusual, unfortunately, and the help from so many people like you is extremely important. I know that God is with you and your wife as you minister to this young woman and her grandmother. They are truly blessed to have you with them, and God will look kindly upon your efforts! May God's blessings be upon you and your wife, my brother! Peace! Cennydd |

That seems a very inappropriate venue, even agreeing with the fact that TEC is apostate. Maybe the IRS should remove the tax exempt status at the Cathedral since they are utilizing the facility as a night club. You can't have it both ways. That type of affair goes far beyond a sacred concert or an event along those lines.
I can only imagine the extra curricular activities taking place in the men's room. |

Sir Elton is an ignoramous. We Christians are COMMANDED by God to love one another. Perhaps he was speaking of Muslims? Isaac |

One other thing just came to mind: Can it be that the cathedral chapter and dean needed the money, and that's why they allowed this shindig to desecrate the place?

Cennydd is right...I am sure it was a "financial" decision and Rachmnnoff is also right that Vickie Jean already did the defiling.
Again, since it's more of a night club, than a house of worship, why are they tax exempt??? They have already proven they will prostitute themselves for money. Degenerates!!! |

Rachmnnoff,
I don't know if you have heard the story about the Russian Church that "married/blessed" a homosexual couple. The bishop ordered the church burned, bulldozed, and buried. For good measure he then excommunicated the priest and everyone who was in attendance. I can't find my link to that story. Does anyone remember this VOL story? If you do, I'd like to have the link. "Leaders of the Russian Orthodox Church didn't just condemn the union of Denis Gogolyev and Mikhail Morozov at a chapel in Nizhniy Novgorod, they fired the presiding priest and ordered the church demolished. Gogolyev, 26, and Morozov, 24, caused a sensation in September when they bribed Father Vladimir Enert to perform Russia's first-ever gay wedding. "He didn't raise an eyebrow. I was surprised," Gogolyev told reporters, while admitting that the priest muttered "How shameful" during the ceremony."

That "story", published Oct. 23, 2003, is by Olivia Kienzel. It was published (according to data in the link) in a national "gay" newspaper called "The Advocate".
It isn't "my" story, and in fact I had not heard of it until reading this blog today. Frankly, I find it rather difficult to believe, and even though I spent a great deal of time googling for it, I could not find the original Russian source. If anyone knows Russian and can google in that language, it might be in Komsomolskaya Pravda, around Sept. 3, 2003. Mary |

Here's another "gay-oriented" website, quoting the BBC as a source, that another google search revealed:
http://tinyurl.com/3xgptr I tend to agree with the Russian authorities cited in the BBC source, in whose opinion the whole thing was a "publicity stunt". Original BBC article can be found here: http://tinyurl.com/37vw6l M |

What is that beautiful old Church down about twentieth street--Holy Communion? Now deconsecrated and functioning as a happening nightclub with plenty of drugs, noise, etc. etc.
Well, looks like good old St John the Unfinished is going to end up the same way. Serious people don't go to such churches, and the people who do go are not serious. This is sad, indeed tragic, for the building is a masterpiece of Romanesque and then Gothic revival, filled with treasures of art and of millennia of devotion. One story, though. My wife and I originally hoped to be married there in the Orthodox chapel right behind the high altar. But the whole church was booked for a society wedding. We were disappointed, so we went to the gift and book shop. I found several books by Martin Luther King, a great man, also by Jesse Jackson, as well as a number of books on flower arranging, a selection of herbal medicines, bayberry soap, candles, bird feeders, semi-precious stone jewelry, incense, light-catchers, etc. etc. all wonderful stuff. My wife is from China, so I asked whether they had a book introducing Christianity. The people were nice as could be, but nonplussed. "Introducing Christianity?" they asked, as if baffled. "Yes" I replied, "you know, something not too complex dealing with the history of Christianity, its doctrines, and so forth." "I'm not sure we have anything like that" came the reply. They began to look through the various "I'm okay" titles that filled the shelves. But they came up empty handed and apologetic, though still seemingly baffled by our request. By this point some other customers were listening in. "So" I asked "are you telling me that in the bookshop of the Christian Cathedral of St John the Divine in New York City, there is no book actually about Christianity?" A lot of laughter. But sadly, none was to be found. That told us something. We were married at Incarnation by Paul Zahl and the rector, brother of our own Father Ousley of Philadelphia. That was twenty years ago. "Worshipers leaving the 6 p.m. Evensong service told the Post they were appalled by the spectacle, but the cathedral has been hit by a severe cash crunch, forcing the dean and chapter to rent it out for concerts and plays."
Evidently Cennydd was right on his initial thought. However, a gay birthday party hardly falls under "concerts and plays" in my humble opinion. |

Back in the 1950s, I thought the Cathedral of St. John the Divine was a holy and wondrous place. When we took our young son into the vast space he exclaimed “holy”, responding to its size if not to its function. Over the years I have become more convinced that the building has become a costly idol more than a holy sanctuary, and that it should be torn down to prevent more sacrilege. The unthinkable has become the necessary in my opinion

Hope it saved all of you a bit of time, Guardian.... It was a gracious thing to post thanks for such a miserable pile of words.
Every church has various scandals and troubles in this fallen world, but remember, Christ has overcome the world. We are all struggling. Let us try at this time not to dwell on matters that are spiritually unedifying, if possible.... May Christ have mercy on all of us! You're welcome (I think....), ZachD.
These were the words in the BBC article that hit me hardest as an Orthodox Christian: QUOTE: Both the men married by Father Vladimir are standing in December's parliamentary elections. They are putting their hopes in the female vote. "Women love and respect us," Denis said. "They even idolise us." UNQUOTE Standing for Parliament, were they indeed? Masha |

Dear Masha,
The Heart of Darkness at the root of this is beyond us! We must pray fervently that foundations of evil would be dashed, crumbled, and made void. And that the Lord will raise His foundations instead. God's blessings and peace, |
