UK: Religious Schools May Not Teach Christian Sexual Morals "As if They Were Objectively True"

LONDON, March 5, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) - After this April's implementation of the Sexual Orientation Regulations (SOR's), British religious schools may no longer be allowed to teach school children that the Christian viewpoint on sexual morality is "objectively true," a government report says.
The Joint Committee on Human Rights, made up of members from Parliament and the House of Lords, has issued a report on the implementation of the Regulations recommending that religious schools be required to modify their religious instruction to comply with the government-approved doctrine of "non-discrimination".
Although religious schools will be allowed to remain open and may continue to give instruction in various religious beliefs, instruction must be modified "so that homosexual pupils are not subjected to teaching, as part of the religious education or other curriculum, that their sexual orientation is sinful or morally wrong."
The report says the Regulations will not "prevent pupils from being taught as part of their religious education the fact that certain religions view homosexuality as sinful," but they may not teach "a particular religion's doctrinal beliefs as if they were objectively true".
Published February 26, the report says, "We do not consider that the right to freedom of conscience and religion requires the school curriculum to be exempted from the scope of the sexual orientation regulations."
With the Equality Act 2006, the government empowered itself to create regulations making it illegal for anyone providing goods, services, facilities, premises, education or public functions, to discriminate against that person on the grounds of "sexual orientation". The SOR's are scheduled to come into effect in England and Wales and Scotland in April this year after a ratifying vote in Parliament. They came into effect in Northern Ireland January 1.
Fr. Tim Finigan, founder of the Association of Priests for the Gospel of Life and pastor of Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic parish in Blackfen, wrote an ominous warning on his weblog that the government's interpretation of the SOR's may represent the end of freedom of religious expression in Britain's schools.
"Make no mistake - this proposal will make it illegal for Catholic schools to teach that the Catholic faith is true," Fr. Finigan wrote Friday. "If the recommendations of the Committee are accepted, it is difficult to see how Catholic schools could continue in Britain."
Fr. Finigan, who teaches sacramental theology at St John's Seminary, Wonersh and is a trustee of Britain's Faith Movement, said the wording of the report was "deliberately muddied". "Our faith does not teach that 'homosexuality' itself is necessarily sinful, it teaches that it is disordered. It is homosexual acts that are sinful."
He points out, however, that the distinction is moot in government circles. "The people who framed this guidance will not accept our teaching that homosexuality is a disorder nor that homosexual acts are sinful."
The homosexual political doctrine, accepted by the British as well as other governments, requires that no distinction be made between the person, the act and the condition or "orientation", making any criticism of the movement's political goals an offence against persons.
British legislators have fully incorporated this doctrine in the law. "They have the bit between their teeth," Fr. Finigan writes. "Although the direction in which public policy has been moving is obvious enough, I am a little surprised at the pace it has now picked up."
The bishop of the Scottish Catholic diocese of Paisley warned his flock last month in blunt terms to become spiritually prepared for open persecution with the implementation of the SOR's. Speaking on the problem of Catholic adoption agencies, Bishop Philip Tartaglia wrote,
"This unfortunate episode may well herald the beginning of a new and uncertain time for the Catholic Church in the United Kingdom."

Be aware - similar legislation has been proposed in the US to make speaking against homosexuals a "hate crime".
Drip, drip, drip. One step at a time. How long until it is illegal to mention that Muslims are the worlds chief purveyors of terrorism? How long until it becomes illegal to play Christmas music on the radio or have Christmas TV programs? It's only one more drip/small step to banning Christian broadcasting altogether. Then what about churches? Won't be long before we'll be having this discussion in Spanish and Arabic. |

This is how it goes when "Men Without Chests" bow and scrape to their masters.
Every "episcopalian" that does not preach the truth to his own revisionist priest and bishop forges a link in his own chain. Every American who cowers before Political Correctness, peer pressure, or who looks the other way when he ought to take a stand, forges another link in his chain. Every Englishman that srugs his shoulders and tries to ignore the undoing of one thousand years of struggle for Liberty forges another link in his chain. American Patriot and firebrand Samuel Adams said many fine words. But none more so than this Quote: "While the people are virtuous, they cannot be subdued; but when they lose their virtue they will be ready to surrender their liberties to the first external or internal invader." --Samuel Adams May the Lord God Almighty have mercy on me and my people, sinners. |

JOTM, Mr Adams was right! Too bad the British Parliament hasn't learned this!

These latest efforts in the UK and the US to effectively make the teaching and practice of Christianity illegal should be a call to arms. Not violence, but of the need to be vigilant of the government and publicize as widely as possible the proposal of such anti-Christian legislation. I can't speak for the UK, but in the States these things usually get killed by the courts or by public outcry. But, in general, America is a more religious country than the UK.
It is a symptom of the enfeeblement of the culture that it cannot assert our traditional values. Fortunately, it is like an immune difficiency ailment which weakens and often kills those who contract it. I see liberalism as beginning its period of decline and destruction. It knows it's losing ground, to Muslims or Christians, and thus has to silence dissent. lh |

lionheart, you say; ""I see liberalism as beginning its period of decline and destruction.""
i pray your right BUT if you are reading elsewhere you'll see you are probably wrong; """Below are just a few facts... Curricula in all public schools equating same-sex marriage to the marriage of a husband and wife will teach children the homosexual lifestyle is normal and wholesome. Education is being prepared to begin the indoctrination of children as young a five in the gay agenda. Teachers in Massachusetts are actively promoting the teaching of the homosexual lifestyle to children in middle school. Here is a link to a book they use http://www.article8.net/downloads/LittleBlackBook.pdf . It is too gross to copy and paste, but just go to page 7 to see part of the instruction. It even gives a list of gay pick-up places. This booklet was distributed to hundreds of kids (middle school age and up) at Brookline High School, Brookline, MA, on April 30, 2005. It was written by the Boston-based AIDS Action Committee, with help with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and the Boston Public Health Commission. It is full of inconsistencies and untruths about the effects of the lifestyle and the diseases that result. I urge you to look at http://www.article8.org/ which is the home of Article 8 Alliance and Parents Rights Coalition In Massachusetts Deb Allen teaches 8th grade sex-ed in Brookline. She keeps a picture of her lesbian partner and their kids on her desk and gay equality signs on the wall. Allen says “she’s already been teaching a gay-friendly curriculum for nearly a decade, but she says she does begin this year (2004) feeling a bit more emboldened. In my mind, I know that, ‘OK, this is legal now’.” Allen says, “teaching about homosexuality is also more important now. She says the debate around gay marriage is prompting kits to ask a lot more questions, like what is gay sex, which Allen answers thoroughly and explicitly with a chart”. She says, “she is going to draw some different activities, like kissing and hugging, and different kinds of intercourse. She asks her students to fill in the chart with yeses and nos. She asks can a woman and a woman kiss and hug? YES. Can a woman and a woman have vaginal intercourse, and they will all say no. And she’ll say, ‘Hold it. Of course, they can. They can use a sex toy. They could use’--and we talk--and we discuss that. So the answer there is yes”. Found at http://www.article8.org/docs/general/NPR_0913.htm PARENTS OUTRAGED: Second-grade teacher (in David Parker's school!) reads "modern fairy tale" to class on homosexual romance and marriage! Teacher tells parents that theme of day was "weddings" and that gay marriage is legal - "I want to present all points of view." NO notice given! Principal tells parents (1) they cannot opt out (2) there will be no parental notification despite state law and (3) "I will not guarantee that something like this won't happen again". Pro-gay Superintendent and School Board Chairman tell TV reporters they agree with decision. http://www.massresistance.com/docs/issues/king_and_king/ In a GLSEN workshop, titled "Inclusive Kindergartners," a New York teacher and lesbian activist named Jackie Williams told other gay teachers that "5-year-old children are developing their superego, and that's when the saturation process needs to begin." In order to initiate conversations on gay issues in the classroom, Williams has her kindergarteners read from an assortment of pro-gay children's books, including Heather has Two Mommies and One Dad, Two Dads, Brown Dad, Blue Dads. When a lesbian teacher tells her colleagues that “we need to start the saturation process” when children are 5-years-old, it’s obvious that gay activists will stop at nothing in order to co-opt the hearts and minds of our kids. This legislation would virtually mandate that kids as young as 5 be exposed to homosexuality, to transgendered behavior, to cross-dressing -- you name it. What will the effects be upon children's minds if they are exposed to these at such an early age? http://www.family.org/cforum/extras/a0040597.cfm In California “SB 1437 is building on that framework by mandating that all curriculum be stripped of any wording that is deemed to reflect a bias against homosexuals, bisexuals, transgenders and transsexuals," Cushman said. "This bill goes beyond the pale of the others — because this time, it ends any pretense of objectivity. If passed, it would force every public-school teacher in the state to present a one-sided portrayal of homosexuality — that it's good, normal and worthy of endorsement." The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has taken the unusual step of editing one of its rulings in a parental-rights case. According to Matt Staver, president of Liberty Counsel, the panel, led by ultraliberal jurist Steven Reinhardt, decided to review its ruling in Fields v. Palmdale School District -- a 2005 decision in which the judges told parents in Palmdale, Calif., they had no constitutional right to object to any sex-ed curriculum offered in public schools. That is just a bit of what young children will be exposed to if ECUSA, politicians, fence sitters, and the gay agenda have their way. How do you stop a Mac gay agenda truck barreling down hill out of control on an icy day, because this is what is happening? Carol """ |

Government telling religious schools that they cannot teach their perspectives as "objective truth" is state-based persecution.
Who, pray tell, is to tell us what "objective truth" is? Hmmm? Would it be the government perhaps? Unreal... -Jim+ |

The rate at which Britain has embraced a virulent anti-Christian agenda under Phony Blare and his New Labour pals is quite astonishing. It's only a matter of months before we see the first arrests of Christians for practising their faith.
Mmm... I do wonder whether govt commissars will stop Muslim schools from teaching that the Koran is objectively true? Or will this law apply only to Christians? |

Is the following to be considered a hate crime --or is it "objective truth"?
The orthodox in the UK take notice: The homosexual semantics and sexual orientation terminology changes the thinking and perceptions in regard to the created order of “male and female” as specifically taught in Scripture and understood for eons, as long as history is recorded. It diverts the teaching from male/female to a heterosexual/ homosexual comparison. In other words, the “sexual orientation” concept confuses the male/female teaching, obfuscating the issue of sexual behavior and conduct, alleging behavior and conduct is a function of one’s sexual orientation, even to the end of rationalizing the marriage of same-sex partners. The term “sexual orientation” leaps at us as a concept, saying in essence, we are no longer to be described as being male or female, we are described as heterosexuals and homosexuals, two major sub-classifications of male and female. This is what is being taught to our children today, even to the point of encouraging young people to experiment with bisexual behavior to ascertain one’s sexual orientation. This new terminology has been devised by homosexual activists to embrace the sexual orientation semantics. Let’s be specific as to what this new semantics and frontier terminology is. The instruction of glbtq (gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and those questioning) is twisted in a semantic collage with terms such as “human sexuality,” and “homophobia” to differentiate and dispute the teachings of Scripture. Homosexuality is juxtaposed with heterosexuality as a rationale to gain approval for homosexual conduct. The sexual orientation doctrine proposes a basic lie. Sexual behavior is explained as a specific psychological direction of a “fixed” sexual interest. It is alleged to be an orientation ingrained in the nature that dominates the will of the individual. This controversial doctrine insists that sexual orientation is so profound it cannot be changed by the power of the individual’s will. The doctrine presupposes that even Christ’s call of repentance and confession cannot be meaningful since one’s sexual orientation is considered to be God’s “gift” and cannot be changed. These terms and the “fixed sexual orientation” concept have become a part of our linguistic fabric, rhetorically, legally and ecclesiastically, as a result of an exercise in semantics by priests and ministers, sociologists, psychologists, politicians and, yes, judges. The language floods the schools, colleges, seminaries of the nation, where young minds are confronted by the new semantic and its implied psychic and moral meanings. Our leading thinkers have been swept into using these terms! And here is the lie that causes the whole semantic rationale to fall when confronted by the truth of Christianity and the Scriptures. Homosexuals with a will to change may change. That fact is proven. For the testament of Scripture is homosexuality is sin, that confession and repentance are required (1John 1:5-10), and the statement that the Holy Spirit is leading to embrace the lies of the homosexual semantics embracing “fixed sexual orientation” is a lie from the pit of hell! If this isn't the truth, then Christianity (and the Abrahamic/Judeo heritage) is doomed, for it has insisted over many thousands of years, from the record in Genesis forward, that Sodomy and homosexual practice is sin. If this statement is considered a hate crime by secular authorities, I will place my life on the line to prove it is not. |

Ah, gregory,
Once again my response got lost. To summarize, focusing on public education will indeed depress you. Private is better. I see the world rebelling, in a variety of ways, against progressive liberalism. The Chinese, the Russians, the Muslims, etc. have had it with the West's imperialism of values. Considering that many in the South, the Southwest and the Plains States in the US feel the same way, I'm more optimistic. Only time will tell though. lh |

Anyone who thinks Orthodox Christian sexual teaching is wrong or doubtful should read Ray Monk: Bertrand Russell and the Ghost of Madness. Russell had all the present day heresies (heterosexual heresies, by and large. He was very tolerant, but an indefatifable pursuer of the opposite sex) figured out early in the last century and tried, earnestly and sincerely, to live according to the truth he had invented.
It just did not work. The result: a complete disaster, for him, for his family, for all he knew and loved, for many who simply came in contact with him. The doctrines in question are like gravity: not just a good idea, THEY ARE THE LAW. As for religious teaching, my two boys are in England at C of E schools. The Greek, the Latin, the Physics, etc, are miles and miles ahead of anything here as is the general level of civility and discipline. But the religious education curriculum is a disaster: it seems to consist of endless discussions of how wicked and heartless Americans are, driving their gas guzzlers down freeways while the poor scrabble amidst the garbage cans seeking something edible. Chapel is only occasionally required and dumbed down. They will never learn by heart the prayer book and the hymns, as I did, starting in my teens. As I said to my good Parish Bishop, "let them sink their teeth into a religious text. I don't care if it is the Lotus Sutra or the Koran or Hinduism, or Walden. (Or even, for that matter, the Bible). But dig in deep, read it line by line, look up the hard words, argue the hard points, test on it, treat it as if it were something serious." As a former Unitarian I know how important it is to awaken the religious sensitivity in young people. That can be done in many ways. But silly readings about contemporary politics, that are not even accurate, is not one of them. That convinces them that it is all a joke, purveyed by rather odd characters who can't do anything else. Young people must begin to understand the mysteries of the universe. The rest--the doctrine--can wait. It has a way of making itself known. Start with serious engagement. That goes for our sunday schools and silly cutesy pageants and so forth as well. As I say, treat religious studies like math. Or rather, as Math should be treated. It is important, really important. True, it is difficult for many. But so what? Sweat it out. There is a payoff. And the payoff from religion is even greater. Remember too that we already have public schools scrubbed free of religion even as an object of study. What would the Founders say?? (And what will the future hold??) As ever Boston Unitarian |
