CANADA: Former Gay Clergy Applaud Williams for his Stand on Homosexuality
Open Letter to the Archbishop of Canterbury:
August 29, 2006
Dear Archbishop Williams:
Greetings in Christ! We applaud your recent interview with a Dutch journalist, to whom you said that while the Church welcomes homosexual persons, they are called to align their behaviour with the mind of Christ.
We represent a group of Canadian Anglicans who were once sexually active with members of the same sex or who have struggled with exclusively same-sex attractions. Some of us are now celibate by choice; some of us are now in heterosexual marriages.
We agree wholeheartedly that inclusion should not be treated as a value in itself. Far from experiencing your recent statement as a "betrayal," as one British politician is reported to have characterized it, we endorse the reassertion of the Church's traditional teaching against homosexual acts. When our spiritual leaders water down the life-giving gospel message of repentance and forgiveness, that, we believe, is the true betrayal.
We look to the Church for pastoral care and moral direction, subject to the authority of Scripture, which would empower us in the ordering of our relationships (as stated in Lambeth Resolution 1.10). We yearn to hear our Church boldly preach the gospel message of transformation and discipleship.
We are thankful that you have affirmed your duty to "guard the faith and teaching of the Church." Please be assured of our ongoing prayers for you and the Anglican Communion as you continue to lead us.
Yours very truly, in Christ Jesus,
Rev'd Dawn McDonald (Diocese of Yukon) Rev'd Don Alcock (Diocese of Huron) Daryle Duke (Diocese of Rupert's Land) Carole Simms (Diocese of Toronto) on behalf of The Zacchaeus Fellowship

Hear, Archbishop, the voices of those who truly seek God through repentance and a longing for holiness of life. To deny their witness of Christ's gracious work is to deny Him and His sacrifice entirely. May other of your fellow bishops themselves hear the Chief Shepherd's call to His faithful service. Amen. |

by no means a new or original observation, but in the new "theologizing by telling our stories" (note theo-logy or word/knowledge about God become us-ology but I digress) these types of stories rarely are included... as they do not fit the mold... how dare they suggest what they themselves felt in the very human feelings of the moment may *not* have been God-given-just-as-I-am-and-therefore-what-God-wants-
me-to-be-so-you-must-bless-it... not too many parties at GC for this crowd... or catchy buttons or CNN interviews... just people honestly struggling with what used to be known as chastity and obedience before both got a bad name... bless them... and their courageous witness... |

Anybody consulted one Jesus of Nazareth about this recently? I was reading an old discredited (by GC 2006, anyway) book called the Gospel of Matthew recently.
In that old book Jesus claims that one must exceed the righetousness of the Scribes and the Pharisees to be admitted to the Kingdom of Heaven. And this same Jesus cites some of the ten commandments (remember them? they are from the oppressive Old Testament), pointing out that the commandments against adultery and murder are much more sweeping than was commonly understood. You should not break your marriage vows, Jesus said, by so much at looking at another woman with lust. And calling a brother a fool? Big trouble there. Rowan Cantaur has a long way to go here. |

Gregory, thanks very much for your prayers.
ZachD and I have both tested the brochure link and not had any trouble with it. I've been tinkering with the site recently, so if you (or anyone else) have further technical difficulties, please let me know offline. You can e-mail me via my own blog: http://thesheepfold.typepad.com/ |
