COLUMBUS, OH: Gay stance = 'icing on the cake of rejection'

COLUMBUS, OHIO (6/20/06)-Following the defeat on Tuesday by the House of Deputies of a moratorium on ordaining homosexual bishops and blessing homosexual unions, a leading conservative Episcopalian told VirtueOnline that the failure of the measure is "like icing on the cake of rejection."

Dr. Michael Howell, a professor at the University of South Florida and a member of the Special Committee on the Episcopal Church and the Anglican Communion, contends that reconciliation between the Anglican Communion and the Episcopal Church is uncertain, and that it is absolutely clear where the Episcopal Church now stands.

"We've made a statement about who we are as a church, that the new agenda of revisionism is far more important to us as a church than to remain a constituent member of the Anglican Communion, a branch of God's holy and Apostolic church," said Howell, who was the only consistently conservative vote on the Special Committee.

The defeat of Resolution A160 on the floor of the House of Deputies Tuesday was particularly clear because it the Special Committee had structured it as a compromise between the demands of the Anglican Communion and the Windsor Report on one hand, and the homosexual movement within the Episcopal Church on the other.

"I'm not surprised because the resolution did not really address the recommendations of the Windsor Report, despite the fact that it used some Windsor-like language. It was a compromise that a large portion of the church couldn't support," said Howell.

Indeed, conservatives were upset by the Resolution A160's apology to homosexuals for hurt that may be caused by the resolution itself, and the liberal majority opposed the resolution for its proposed moratoria on homosexual approvals.

But it was clear who held sway on the convention floor, Howell indicated. "The real story here is the rejection of a substitute motion, because it was clearly Windsor-compliant using Windsor-language."

The substitute resolution was offered by the Fort Worth deputation, and it stated:

"Resolved, the House of ___ concurring, That the 75th General Convention of the Episcopal Church 'effect a moratorium on the election and consent to the consecration of any candidate to the episcopate who is living in a same gender union until [and unless] some new consensus in the Anglican Communion emerges" (Windsor Report 134), and be it further Resolved, That the 75th General Convention effect a moratorium on the authorizing of all public rites of blessing of same-sex unions (Windsor Report 144), and be it further Resolved, That the 75th General Convention call on those bishops who have authorized public rites for blessing same-sex unions, 'because of the serious repercussions in the Communion...to express regret that the proper constraints of the bonds of affection were breached by such authorization' (Windsor Report 144)."

The President of the House of Deputies, the Rev. George Werner, overruled the Substitute resolution as unconstitutional. After an appeal, the House upheld Werner's decision.

Howell responded, "We are not willing to follow the recommendation of the Lambeth Commission in terms of the Windsor Report. I think that's where the decision was made. Rejection of A161 was like icing on the cake of rejection."

Other members of the committee interpreted the A161 vote differently.

"I think the house is still trying to figure out its mind," said the Rev. Sandye Wilson, rector of St. Andrew and Holy Communion in South Orange, New Jersey, a member of the Special Committee, as she headed off to her "first real dinner in eight days" since the committee began its work at the convention.

The Rev. Frank Wade of the Diocese of Washington, chairman of the Special Committee, told VirtueOnline, "I don't think the ballgame is over at this point," adding, "We are not the last word anywhere." Other channels, he said, will be available to reconcile differences with the Anglican Communion.

"I think our job is to help the church say what it wants to say," said Wade. But when VirtueOnline asked Wade why the convention had rejected the work of the committee, Wade replied, "I don't know." There is a tension in the church, he said. "The people stand by the decisions made in 2003...The commitment of this church to gay and lesbian persons in this church is strong." The idea of a moratorium was unwelcome to many in the church, Wade said.

But given the defeat of A161 and the substitute resolution that included language directly from the Windsor Report, Howell suggested that the road ahead for the Episcopal Church will be precarious. "By not adopting the recommendation of the Windsor Report, we have removed the one sure way that we would have been able to move forward in the process that would have allowed us to remain in the Anglican Communion. We have rejected the one sure path and we have now adopted the path of uncertainty," said Howell.

"There is only one way of certainty," Howell concluded. "But now we have to be willing to accept whatever ramifications there may be."

At least ECUSA skipped their usual dancing around the issue with babbling lawyer-speak and came right out and said we'll do what we want. The cement has not only been poured, but it has dried. No one can know sit in their pews on Sunday and not take a stance one way or the other.

If Virtue's report on Bruno's meeting in California with 20 bishops earlier in the year is true, then it would be wise for that agreement to be reapproached. Let the orthodox take their own parishes, and the liberals take theirs...otherwise ECUSA could go bankrupt from the property disputes.

I'll repost something I wrote from another article that seems appropriate here...

“Resolved, the House of ______ concurring, That the 75th General Convention of TEC, (Totally Excluding Conscience), has moved that we regret and feel pity on those backward Africans, Asians, and hate-filled orthodox who have yet to receive the gnosis that we, enlightened post-Christian Americans, have been gloriously given by the Holy Spirit, who we direct through our resolutions.

We further move that LGBTs are the ones who have suffered most from the oppressive and disgraceful actions of those who uphold some anti-Jewish, 'Jesus only saves' Scriptures that have led so many away from the touchy, feely faith that we hold dear.

We further move that there be a moratorium on all 'heterosexual' ordinations until we can discern whether or not they are hiding true feelings for the same sex.

We further move that we can say whatever we want, and all those opposed to peace and justice and inclusion on our terms can go to hell.

...this might as well be the resolutions, for they say the same thing in Episcobabble.

Keep the Faith everyone. Remember that God will not be mocked.

If it's absolutely clear where the Episcopal Church now stands, then reconciliation between the AC and the Episcopal Church is not uncertain. It is out of the question.

This just in from the mystical world of ancient archaeology - no, not fraud from France that’s Mr.
Brown’s forte - this is the real stuff from the internet (where everything published must be true) other wise known as the The Gospel of Judas, Part II, Chapter 4, Verses 1-4 affectionately known as “Blender Theology” .

1: When the followers of the other apostles insist that you be clear and declare your intentions to adhere to the words of my (Judas Priest!) former master, respond to them with dilatory and obfuscatory language, emphasizing the ever changing nature of all of the universe and the infinite variety of personalities and idea of the god(s), even claiming that my (Judas Priest!) former master is always changing his mind too!

Blender Theology, Continued

2: Grind their patience to the bone by endlessly focusing on the art of conversation and demand to be heard, always repeating the same nonsense no matter how sound the arguments raised against you. The better the argument opposing you, the more you must demand to be heard and the more hurt you must appear in order to raise sympathy and overcome your obvious lack of wit.
3: In this way even their finest arguments can be ignored and you , although beaten, will win when they finally break down, shake their heads, give up and go home. Who knows? You may even trick them into accepting homosexuality, lesbianism, polygamy, female priests, gnosticism, euthenasia and abortion and get them so confused they even declare the law, the wisdom writings and the prophets to be anti-semetic works.
4: Afterwards, when all is over, drink some bubbly water and have a cucumber sandwich, and consider how wonderfully you have advanced this my (Judas Priest!) gospel. You are so close to getting that reward you were promised!

Why “blender theology”? Because the more you run it the mushier it gets!

Great stuff there, Causidicus!

Hey, I have been unable to locate a copy of the Gospel of Jumpin' Judas in our local recycle bins. It's in the Dead Letter Scrolls, isn't it?

I checked the Satire part of this site and I didn't find it there. Maybe if there's not a complete copy to be had, we can gather up the fragments from various posts to compile (compost?) a copy.

As far as Frank Wade's comments go, I refuse to consider him clergy, I know him to be extream left. When he conducted the discussion on the Windsor Report at my church, episcobabble doesn't begin to cover it, he made light of the whole document as if it were irrelivant.

I think most who were there left more confused about the issues than when they arrived.

Well actually, Melora20, I appreciate your offer, but I have a loose arrangement (sort of like an
instrument of unity only without the teeth) with Joe of the Mountain: When we are able to “discover” all of the pieces of this rare and important Gospel, we will have them published and sold by the Episcopal News Service.

We have a problem though: Staples sells a good quality brown packaging paper that, with a little dirt, mud, motor oil and burns around the edges looks like parchment, but the computer printed script is just too perfect and Joe tells me there is a carbon dating problem, whatever that means. But I’m not worried - just like with homosexual bishops, gay themed eucharists and polygamous marriage - by dissing the apostles and ignoring tradition, scripture and logic , anything can be overcome by a TECie if their heartfelt desires and mushy emotions are involved.

Say, that’s a great theme for the last day of convention: “What, me worry?”

 Re: What, me worry?
Thank you again, Causidicus. I have great respect for both you and Joe of the Mountain. (I don't understand why he has a problem with carbon dating, as long as it's a committed relationship. But I guess that's beside the point.)

Yes, don't let those things stop you. Remember, authenticity doesn't matter. Truth doesn't matter. Make it what you want it to be!

New circumstances call for new terms. How about the GAYPISCOPALIAN CHURCH? Or, perhaps the GAIAPISCOPALIAN CHURCH, (i.e. "Gaia" as in Mother Earth)?

Why do the nations rage, and the leaders take counsel together against the LORD and against His Anointed? They say 'Come, let us cast away Their bonds from us!' He that sits in the heavens laughs; the LORD has them in derision (Psalm 2: 1-4, paraphrased)
