Anglicans From Around the World Converge on Charleston

Mere Anglicanism Conference brings international leaders together to discuss vision for Orthodox Anglicanism in North America.

Charleston, SC, January 21, 2013 - Internationally acclaimed speakers from across the Anglican Communion will be in Charleston January 24-26 for the 8th annual Mere Anglicanism Conference to discuss a vision for reforming and renewing orthodox Anglicanism within North America. Speakers from the United Kingdom, United States and Australia will speak at the public event, to be held at St. Philip's Church.

The focus of this year's event is "Behold the Man: The Person and Work of Jesus Christ."

"The Diocese of South Carolina created this annual conference eight years ago as a way to bring together Anglicans from around the world to explore ways to keep our faith vibrant," said the Rev. Jeffrey Miller, Chair of this year's conference and Rector of the Parish Church of St. Helena in Beaufort.

"Ironically, while the national church has chosen as well to meet this week in Charleston to divide this Diocese, we remain committed to the mission of uniting behind a traditional, orthodox theology and providing Christians with the tools they need to train and educate lay and clergy leaders. We provide world renowned scholars who help attendees become informed, sound believers who are capable of thinking and acting biblically." he said. Speakers bring unique perspectives to the conference:

* The Rt. Rev. Dr. Paul Barnett, ancient historian and New Testament scholar, will speak Friday on "Epiphany - Five Eureka Moments." Barnett is former bishop of North Sydney, Australia; a fellow in ancient history at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia, and a teaching fellow at Regent College, Vancouver, Canada.

* Eric Metaxes, author of New York Times #1 bestseller, Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy, will speak Saturday. Metaxes' book was named "Book of the Year" by the ECPA, won the 2011 John C. Pollock Award for Biography and a 2011 Christopher Award in the Non-fiction category.

* The Rt. Rev. Michael Nazir-Ali, originally from Pakistan and the first non-white diocesan bishop in the Church of England, will speak Friday on the "Unique and Universal Christ." Nazir-Ali is former bishop of Rochester in England and former bishop of Raiwind in Pakistan. He is president of the Oxford Centre for Training, Research, Advocacy and Dialogue (OXTRAD).

* Dr. Allen P. Ross, a professor of Old Testament and Hebrew at Samford University's Beeson Divinity School in Birmingham, AL will speak Friday on "Behold the Man, whose name is Branch." Ross holds a B.A. in Biblical Studies, Bob Jones University, Th.M., Th.D., Dallas Theological Seminary, and a Ph.D., University of Cambridge.

* The Rev. Dr. David Wenham, a British theologian and author of several books on the New Testament, will speak Saturday on "Paul's Witness to Jesus the Son of God." Wenham studied theology at Cambridge University, taught at Union Biblical Seminary in India, served as Director of Tyndale House's Gospels Research Project in Cambridge and was dean and vice principal of Wycliffe Hall in the University of Oxford for several years.

The conference begins Thursday, January 24 with a 5 p.m. service of Choral Evensong and runs through Saturday, January 26. The full schedule and cost and registration information can be found at www.mereanglicanism.com
