GREENVILLE, SC: Episcopal leader Jefferts Schori says anger over gay ordination has eased

The Episcopal Church USA and its sister churches in the worldwide Anglican Communion have stronger relationships in many ways now than before the American church angered the more conservative members by consecrating a gay bishop, the church's presiding bishop said Friday.

The Most Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori, the national leader of the Episcopal Church in 16 countries, including its 2.4 million members in the U.S., is in Greenville for the consecration today of a new bishop for the Diocese of Upper South Carolina, the Rev. Andrew Waldo.

She said fallout from the 2003 decision to consecrate Gene Robinson as bishop of New Hampshire appears to have settled out for the most part.

"The reactivity right now is much, much less than it was seven years ago," she said during an interview at Christ Church, where Waldo's consecration will take place.

"I think the church, and certainly the part of the church in the United States, is reasonably clear about where we're going, even though everybody doesn't agree. And those in the church, I think, are willing to live with that tension."

Some Episcopalians who believe Scripture is clear in condemning homosexuality have left the church and formed an alternative province, while some parishes, including one in Aiken County, have left the denomination.

Others, such as Jefferts Schori, believe the gospel, taken in context, doesn't condemn monogamous homosexual relationships.

"There are certainly parts of the Anglican Communion that continue to be unhappy with the Episcopal Church and the church in Canada," she said, "but we continue to build relationships across the communion, mission partnerships, and I think those are probably stronger than they were 10 years ago, and there are more of them.

"So we're beginning to understand each other's contexts a little bit better."

Jefferts Schori, a former oceanographer and native of Panama City, Fla., on the Gulf Coast, said she is concerned that the oil spill off the Louisiana coast will create another disaster of the magnitude of Hurricane Katrina, which struck the same area five years ago.

"It's just tragic," she said. "A whole lot of denial about the difficulty of drilling in that way and a whole lot of denial, apparently, on the part of agencies that were supposed to be watching and protecting things.

"There's a whole lot more oil in that gulf than people have acknowledged, and it's going to do a whole lot of damage."

The accident is a dramatic example that humans "don't control creation," she said.

"I think the other lesson is that we're going to get a remarkable demonstration of how interconnected all parts of creation are when you can't buy shrimp in the grocery store because they're likely to be polluted; when the cost of fuel rises yet again because we haven't paid enough attention to green energy and alternative forms of energy production.

"The impact in Louisiana and on the Gulf Coast on people who make their livings from the sea is immense and it's going to get worse," she said.

"And it always impacts the poorest among us."

The church, she said, will continue to advocate for effective regulation, for environmentally sound practices, green energy "and on behalf of the people who are the most affected."

Waldo, a native of Montgomery, Ala., who has served in churches in New Hampshire, Georgia and Minnesota, will become the bishop of the Upstate's 26,000 Episcopalians, some 1,700 of whom will be on hand to witness his consecration.

More than 20 bishops from across the country and clergy and lay leaders from churches where he has served, as well as members of his extended family, will be there, he said.

"It just feels like a really wonderful expression of the diversity and breadth of God's community," he said. "I'm just enjoying every bit of it."

Oh it is not anger dear bishop- it is pure disgust for your diverse and unrepentent leadership about where we are going. Where are you going? Ask Jesus..........

Many of us have stopped caring what you and your ilk do. We've got better things to do, and we've moved on.

I'm not sure what kind of mushrooms Schori has been nibbling but they certainly are reality distorting. TEC is stronger? More cohesive? Really? Look at ASA, giving, and loss of membership. If it were possible, procedurally, the majority of the Anglican Communion would have dumped TEC long ago. The only reason there is less static about Glasspool than Robinson is that there are an awfully lot less people still in TEC that really care about what Schori and her band of LGBT banditos do. Look at the picture in another article on this site showing the Consecration. Anyone one see any males? TEC is well on its way to being the homosexual, lesbian and feminist paradise that Schori wants.

And I sure don't care. Just observing.

The anger has dissipated? What has that woman been smoking?

Just because they haven't got "in your face" about it lately, that doesn't mean it isn't boiling under the surface, and the reaction to this latest farce has only just begun to show itself.

She hasn't heard anything yet!

And remember: That membership figure of 2.4 million people is misleading, since it no doubt includes parishioners who either died and are still on the rolls, or who have left for other churches....never to return.

Of course she says anger has eased; can one fault her for saying that? Things sure appear to have "settled out." The ABC is deafeningly silent on the latest homosexual "consecration." The Global South speaks loudly but doesn't carry a big stick - so far. The Glasspool consecration passed virtually without a ripple - at least a public ripple, whatever other Anglicans' private displeasure about it. TEC is getting away with their in-your-face rebuffs of the orthodox Anglicans, and knows it. So much so that a practicing, partnered homosexual is now on the ballot in Utah and is in secod place - although I understand it's a distant second place. Pretty soon being homosexual is going to be a requirement to be a bishop in TEC.

Her Squidness says she is "reasonably clear where we are going..." I'll tell you where you are going--to you-know-where in a handbasket. And since there are far fewer than 2.4 million members, they should fit into that basket just fine.

Souls are being lost. Sad

Agreed, marinemama, and it won't be too much longer before it'll be a requirement for getting into seminary.

Perhaps she is right. We are not as angry any more because we have moved on. TEC is becoming increasingly irrelevant to us. Even Canterbury does not seem as important any more as the Southern Primates forge a new vision of Anglicanism.

Hopefully the proposed ecumenical council, should it happen, will finally sort this mess out.

"The church, she said, will continue to advocate for effective regulation, for environmentally sound practices, green energy and on behalf of the people who are the most affected."

Among all of the things that this former Christian denomination has become (political activist, purveyor of various secular philosophies, unitarian, sodomite apologist, pagan revivalist, lobbyist, etc.) I'll bet you didn't know that LAW FIRM was one of them, did you?

Someone needs to ask Beers why he has not filed a UPL complaint.

It is not that disgust is lessening. Rather Christians have moved on from your heretical behavior. As far as you and your body of sin (TEC) are concerned, our sorrow for you is being expressed in sincere prayer for your repentance and return to the pure faith in Jesus Christ. Please don't wallow in the seeming peace of your separation. Rather seek the Jesus from Whom you have separated yourself!

KJS is so laughable! Really!!!! The majority who are left in TEc agree with her but in truth there is no one really left to raise any objections and rock the boat. Those who are left have simply moved on to do the work of God in the darkness of TEc and be the light of Christ within. She is so delusional. Pretty soon they will all be devouring each other because what and who else do they have left to destroy besides each other?

Re: GREENVILLE, SC: Bishop Jefferts Schori says anger ove...
I'm starting to think that the biggest tragedy in this whole circus is the apathy and willingness to compromise among those who once gave every indication of being lovers of the Truth and a great tradition reflecting it. Christ Church in Greenville -- a church I visited several times a few years ago -- seemed to be a wonderful example of godly dynamism. A bit later I heard it was starting to fall apart, and now I see this report. It seems like a lot of people with orthodox views hold those views strongly enough to stop showing up at a church like this but don't hold them strongly enough to raise their hands and say: ENOUGH! Does anyone here have a different analysis?

jfmckenna the same could be said for those of us who left TEc. Strong enough convictions to separate but not strong enough convictions to stand up and say NO to the revisionists who now have control of the ECUSA.

Re: GREENVILLE, SC: Bishop Jefferts Schori says anger ove...
TEC's progressive secular leaders forced this abomination down everyone's throat. The initial reaction was shock, dismay and anger. As time has gone on, the initial reaction has dissipated and what is now happening is the steady and predictable decline in attendance and new memberships.

There is no reason to assume that TEC will reverse any of its self-created problems - so Schori is talking about anger and ignoring reality. This is all TEC has to offer and, in the end in a few decades, TEC will make an addition to a history book. And let's not forget, the destruction of the core values of Christianity are the intentions of collectivist progressives who understand that social justice cannot replace equal opportunity without destroying the truth of religion and morality.
