A collection of pro-abortion religious groups authored a letter today to members of the Senate that essentially places them on record supporting taxpayer funding of abortions. The letter expresses their opposition to the Nelson amendment, released today, to remove abortion funding from the Senate government-run health care bill.
The Episcopal Church, Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), United Church of Christ, and United Methodist Church are the four mainline protestant denominations to sign the letter asking lawmakers to oppose the Nelson amendment.
They are joined by the Disciples Justice Action Center, NA'AMAT USA, the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice, a pro-abortion group, The Religious Institute, and the Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations.

Isn't the UMC still officially against abortion as birth control? I thought PCUSA was too, but looking at their site I was clearly wrong. Thank God they're showing their true colors. May God bring them down, and bring them to repentance.

What a shame. If only the people in the pews, those who are the heart of the faith, knew and understood the travesty that is occuring within the leadership of their denominations. Appeal after appeal comes down from the HQs begging for money that goes to lobby for the massacre of the innocence.

How is this news, these "Churches" abandoned Christianity for "Social Justice" issues years ago, ACORN in clerical collars if you like.
I am surprised that the ELCA isn't in on this. BTW - In all fairness I know that there are still a few faithful Christians left in these bodies, but they are quiet minority. My 2¢ |

This is yet one more display of the fact that these "churches" are no longer Christian. Unfortunately, this will be hidden from those in the pews, and lost on most.

Is this not the action of God, separating the sheep from the goats, and the wheat from the chaff? God is not the author of this evil, but he will allow humankind its freedom of action. As for the true Christians left in the world, they may see more clearly the good from the bad, the righteous from the unrighteous, and respond accordingly. Spiritually we must circle the wagons, while politically we must act against the whims of modern culture. If Yahweh is God worship him; if Baal is god worship him. It's been ever thus.

These people might be "religious" but they are NOT Christian. No Christian can stand for the slaughter of babies. Period.

I knew that the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) had some problems that has resulted in a conservative schism, but I'm shocked that it deteriorated to this point. I'm also surprised with the Methodists who are supposed to be focused on pieism.
Its one thing to keep quiet on the issue -- that is the sin of fear or complacently. It's quite another to actively support the issue and oppose what is right. For this there is no excuse....At least the Baptists are still on the right side of this issue....for now. It's really sad to see, but the forecasts in "The coming evangelical collapse": http://www.csmonitor.com/2009/0310/p09s01-coop.html seem to be coming true. Unless missionaries from Asia and Africa come to re-evangelize the US and Canada, or unless true Anglo-Catholicism can bounce back, or unless the RCC and EOC can absorb the diaspora of Christians and stand firm, I see dark days ahead. We need to pray for our pre-born children, our elderly, and the disabled. Their days are far darker. |

Has anyone seen a copy of the letter to see who signed on behalf of these churches? Unless the UMC has changed dramatically in the last two years, no one has the authority to sign on behalf of the entire denomination.
So before we all begin condemning fellow Christians (and believe me, I am totally against abortion) I think we ought to have more information. Ed |

Pray for the souls of the children murdered by those who call themselves Christians. It is incomprehensible how any "church" can support or condone abortion. It is not a matter of "social justice", whatever that is, it is murder, pure and simple.
