Bishop Nazir-Ali Renowned Lecturer and Preacher Coming to the US in May

Bishop Michael Nazir-Ali, the 106th Bishop of Rochester for 15 years, until he stepped down in September 2009, will visit the U.S. to speak on Reformational Anglicanism and Christian Mission at the CANA East synod to be held May 1-3, 2014, at Christ Church on the Mainline, hosted by Wayne United Methodist Church in Wayne, Pennsylvania.

Dr. Nazir-Ali will also be speaking on the topic of Taking Religion Seriously - Muslims, Christians, Jews and World Order at the Merion Tribute House for the John Jay Institute on April 30th at 7:00 PM. See here for details:

Nazir Ali is originally from Asia and is the first non-white Diocesan Bishop in the Church of England. He was appointed in 1994. Before that he was the General Secretary of CMS from 1989-1994. Prior to holding that position, he was Bishop of Raiwind in Pakistan. He holds both British and Pakistani citizenship. From 1999 he was a member of the House of Lords where he was active in a number of areas of national and international concern. He has both a Christian and a Muslim family background and is now President of the Oxford Centre for Training, Research, Advocacy and Dialogue (OXTRAD).

Since stepping down as Bishop of Rochester, he has become a leading Anglican figure addressing the culture wars within the Church of England and a leading commentator on the state of England today.

Nazir Ali studied Economics, Sociology and Islamic History at the University of Karachi, and Theology at Fitzwilliam College and Ridley Hall, Cambridge. His interests have led him to research and study in several fields, including comparative literature, comparative philosophy of religion, and theology at the Universities of Cambridge, Oxford, and elsewhere. He has taught at colleges and universities in the United Kingdom and Pakistan. He is an Honorary Fellow of St. Edmund Hall, Oxford and Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge. He is Senior Fellow of Wycliffe Hall, Oxford. He is Visiting Professor of Theology and Religious Studies in the University of Greenwich and on the Faculty of the London School of Theology (LST) affiliated to the Universities of Brunel and Middlesex, as well as the Oxford Centre for Mission Studies.

He has been a visiting lecturer in a number of universities and colleges in the UK, Canada, the USA, and Australia. He has traveled widely in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, and both Americas. He is the author of eleven books and numerous articles on Mission, Ecumenism, the Anglican Communion, and relations with people of other faiths (particularly Islam).

This is CANA’s second Synod. What began with 23 congregations 12 months ago now stands at 28. The Rt. Rev. Julian M. Dobbs, Missionary Bishop for Convocation of Anglicans in North America will preside on this occasion.

The bishop is also slated to preach the following Sunday at St. George's Anglican Church in Helmetta, NJ at 10am and at Christ Church, Wayne, PA at 4pm.
