January 19 2024 By dvirtue Tim Alberta Is More Sad Than Angry at His American Evangelical Family

This crisis is both political and personal. It is political in that white evangelicals have been the steadiest base of support for the least outwardly faithful president in half a century, at the alleged expense of their prior platitudes about morality and ethics being central to public service. But, as Alberta explains, it is also deeply personal, leading to rifts in families, communities, and congregations.

And things continue to get worse. The last census indicated that 46 percent of the English population claimed to be Christian. Less than half the population but still a considerable percentage. However, at the same time normal Sunday CofE attendance for all ages represents just 0.9 percent of the population.

January 10 2024 By dvirtue ARE THE FOUNDATIONS OF THE GLOBAL SOUTH SECURE?

The first article, written by Professors Hans Boersma, Greg Peters, and Gerald McDermott, all affiliated with Forward in Faith USA, is titled "Is the Anglican 'Reset' Truly Anglican?" The authors question the Anglican bona fides of GAFCON IV's "Kigali Commitment." I have previously written a reply to this article, and while I am somewhat sympathetic to the critique of Kigali's expression that Scripture "is its own interpreter," I find more problematic these critics' claim that "without tradit

January 05 2024 By dvirtue Holy Fire: Hebrews 12:28-13:19 and Unacceptable Worship

The passage from Hebrews is laden with references to the Lord's appearance at Mount Sinai, where his glory was described as a 'devouring fire' (Exodus 24:17) and Moses' warnings to the Israelites in Deuteronomy about idolatrous and false worship (Deut. 9:19). The quotation from Deuteronomy 4:24 highlights the fact that worship can be dangerous. Acceptable worship is that which reverences God's holy nature and his position as judge.

"I would even say it's the normal experience," Brogden said. "It would be accurate to say that Muslims are responding to Jesus in levels we have never seen, not in 1,400 years!"

Over here, Europe is becoming unglued by a failed multiculturalism. The calls for ethnic cleansing of the Jews by the hundreds of thousands of (mainly) Muslims and their allies from the Left who took to the streets after the murder of Israelis on 7 October 2023 bodes ill.

January 02 2024 By dvirtue PHILLIPS BROOKS -- Liberal Episcopal Churchman

Gillis J. Harp, in his terrific biography of Brooks (Brahmin Prophet: Phillips Brooks and the Path of Liberal Protestantism), shows how he helped guide the Episcopal Church into the liberal Protestant way of all mainline denominations. He helped move the church away from the centrality of the cross to focus mostly on the Incarnation - away from salvation by Christ alone to moral improvement.

December 30 2023 By dvirtue C. S. Lewis's "Christmas Sermon For Pagans"

Last year about this time, Lewis expert Crystal Kirgiss made it available on her blog. It is getting attention now because Kerry J. Byrne of Fox News wrote an article about it, focusing on how "it addresses, with almost startling prescience, many of the same culture-war issues simmering for years in the United States and exploding across the nation after the Oct. 7 Hamas terror attacks on Israel."
